Fuel sending unit question

Hello everyone
I am trying to replace the fuel sending unit on my 88 v-6 4x4. I broke all 5 screws that hold it to the tank. How do I fix this? Will the ring on top of the tank unscrew? So I can work on it on the bench eaiser, or will I have to drill them out on the tank?
Second how do I check resistance on the unit it has 3 prongs. Which ones do I test and what setting should my meter be on? and what am I looking for as far a a reading? Lots of questions but I am bad with multimeters. Thanks in advance Joe
