fuel gauge not working, and popping out of 1st and 3rd
Hey,
I just bought a 88' pickup 4x4 22re 5 speed. I have 2 questions...
First, the gas gauge does not work. Previous owner said it stopped working after he replaced the fuel filter, and was fine before. What fuses or relays should i look at before i take the tank out and replace the floater?
Second, seems like this question comes up a lot but 1st and 3rd gears are popping out of gear when on the gas. I just replaced the socket and seat bushing and it didn't help. So i took the shifter lever out and put it into 1st manually and it didn't pop out when i gave it gas! so is it possibly a bent fork? bent shifter lever? re-align something? or just new gear oil??

I'm not the expert on this but mine does it too in first gear. From what I've been reading, it sounds like a shift fork is worn. Next summer I plan to pull the tranny and take a look at the shift fork. I'm thinking that the fork doesn't push the hub far enough onto the splines of the gear to stay engaged. A worn hub or gear could also be the problem, but I sure hope not. Way more work to replace.

Fixed my gas gauge by routing a power source directly behind the gauge to the top mounting bolt. it also fixed my 4wd light, oil light, check engine light, and coolant temp gauge!
i owned 3 VWs before, and this is my first truck.
it's weird raising and getting bigger tires, rather than lowering and getting smaller tires, here's a couple pics:
and now:
and a little flex:

if you plan on going in deep water/mud like that, I suggest that you put a hose on your diff(s) breather and mount it higher than what the water line would be if in deep water. If you haven't already done so.
nice truck BTW

Sorry I don't have a solution for you, but on a side note I would like to say I like your A2, I've got and 89 coupe thats alpine white with an 8v. I'll have to agree with, going from a truck with 31's to buying a daily putting coilovers and riding on 13's was quite a 360 for me. anyways nice 4door, out of curiosity it wouldn't happen to be digi 2 would it? I'm have some trouble with a coolant sensor and oil sensor.

How well is the truck grounded? Thinking about the gauge thing I wonder if it's not grounded properly, you know since the po did the fuel filter maybe they forgot to re-ground something somewhere? Make sure you've grounded the body, the motor, and the frame, or even just pulled them off and cleaned them up a bit.

Easiest way would be to disconnect the battery. I dont do fuses. I just take the battery out lol .... I dont mind re-doing the clock and stereo....
cat help you with your second question though
