Ford 4.0L SOHC --> 2nd Gen Runner?
 

I must say that I have yet to hear of this swap being done but I figured why the hell not. I imagine someone "advanced adapters" might make the parts required to do this swap but as always you guy+ gals would know best. So lets hear it.

Oh but first, why the ford well lets say my brother has a 95 runner and the 3.0 is on its last leg and just today he called to let my father and I know he had just been rear ended and the result was a bent frame on the 99 exploder which we all know is a bad thing and will likely be totaled out. Soooo this brings me to the idea of why not swap out the motor with the 2nd gen.

theres a reason people dont put ford stuff on yotas. well, think about that. If your dads engine has about 100,000 miles on it, figure it has about 75,000 left in the engine/tranny. If you put in a rebuilt toyota engine/tranny you could get another 250,000 out of the the truck. rebuild everything for about 2,500. Take the explorer and sell it for parts and make back the money you spent. if you're bro dont want the truck for anther 250,000 miles, then let it die and buy a ford

Id go with a Toyota 3.4L before I went with a Ford 4.0L.
Its a decent engine, but even my friend who is a Ford tech has admitted that Ford only designs their vehicles to last 7 years. (if they build things to last too long they lose money)

I see a lot of these kinds of questions on the boards and I have to say they are usually not all that well thought out. In the end you'll spend more money then you would to buy a rebuilt 3.0 and what will you have?

Ten years ago these types of swaps used to be popular but I think they are getting more and more rare, Toyota parts just aren't as expensive as they used to be. You'll likely spend more in the end then if you just rebuilt the existing motor.

With the 3.0 the bottom ends are usually fine its just the heads that need extensive work so its not an expensive rebuild.

I would sooner do a mustang 5.0 in a 2nd gen. That is, if you have to have a Ford engine your Toyota

The power of a Ford 4.0L SOHC is actually very similar to a Ford 5.0L V8.
The 5.0L will have a little more torque, but is a heavier engine.

the 4.0 ford is a good mill, but i wouldn't swap anything in my truck unless i've rebuilt it first. saves a lot of headaches.

Thats all well and good but I dot have the 5.0 I have the 4.0 and it was mated to a 5spd Auto tranny, Since I had posted this I found a Chevy 350 and chevy tranny for super cheap. But yeah I would like hime to keep it toyota but we were in the engine swap a few months back as well and To re build the 3.0 not such a great option I had one in my last toyota and it did ok but thats it just ok I love my 3.4 and the 350 sure will be cheaper than the 3.4 by a few thousand at least thanks again guys.

And that is for sure. I would swap a low milage later 3.4 without rebuild but deffinately not a 4.0 Ford.
