first time it revs high on startup- granted its 9 deg. What gives?
For the first time since getting this 4runner it started up this morning the way it should always start. the engine revved up to over 1500rpm. That hasnt been the norm for this truck though. normally it only revs up to about 1100 to 1200 rpm. Only thing that makes this day different from the others is the fact that its 9 degrees outside. So this has me thinking: if this 4runner is supposed to rev up to 1500rpm at startup but only does it when its FREEEEZING, what not working properly?
thanks |
from what i've heard, engines rev higher when its colder outside. But i'm not sure why...
|
Perfectly normal.....

Mine does the exact same thing, sometimes it will go up to around 1600-1700 rpms if it is really cold

So is it normal for the engine to only rev up to 11-1200rpm on not so cold mornings?
|
The engine will run that high to get everything heated up and lubed properly. I only experience that about 2-3 months if that of the year. because we are so fortunate to be in the 90s the rest of the time :D

I'm not sure which engine you have but it's normal. I'm pretty sure on the 22re motor the idle air control is controlled through water temperature, the colder the water temps are in your engine the more air it lets through hence the higher rpms. As water temps rise to operating temperature the idle will slowly drop to normal.

I have the 3.0. It just doesnt seem normal to me for my engine to run at only 1200 rpm at startup even though its 35degrees outside. I'm wondering if my water temp sensor is on the fritz.
ok guys, let me ask you this. For those of you that are currently experiencing daily temp at about 30-40 degrees, when you first start up your engines does the tach normally show about 1100-1200rpm? I would think that even at 30degrees my rpm should be around 1500rpm, not 1200. Am I making sense? |
Normal.
Mine will idle at 2200 on cold mornings. It's annoying trying to start off in first gear while your idling at that speed. :soap: |
There is an air bypass in the throat of the TB thats controlled by coolant temp. Its possible that yours has a little debris in it and isn't quiet opening up enough. You could try cleaning it out with a little carb spray and compressed air when its cold (valve is open when its cold). It seems like you should be up around 1500 on every cold start.

i bet there is a differnce on 5spd vs auto trannies on what the cold start RPM is...
|
Right now (20 to 26degrees F) mine idles around 1800-1900 when turned on, then slowly drops. When it's in the 50's... it is around 1400-1500...
