First Post: ticking sound from engine control module - poor running?
Long time lurker - first post.
After a day of offroad fun in the mojave desert my 95 4runner started running poorly only to run great a short while later. Then it progressively got worse on the drive home until it wouldn't run for any length of time and I got towed...
Looked for obvious loose wires, hoses or any sign of problems. It acted like it was starving for fuel. I suspected a fuel filter, pump or relay. I also remembered hearing a ticking sound coming from the passenger side kick panel starting about mid day. Ran fine then so I fugured it was a loose speaker wire at the time.
Dug into the area this AM. It would start only to shut down right after. I wiggled and tapped on the fuel pump relay and it now runs. Figure I need a new one. Problem is that ticking sound was/is coming from the engine control box just below. Perhaps the relay is acting up and causing the noise?
Any advise before I head to the junk yard and start replacing stuff?
95 4runner, V6, 234K miles, too much fun.

Thanks Wabbit,
Well, I finally figured things out after poking around and giving the situation some thought. Turned out the plug to the AFM was slightly dislodged by the sheet metal heat shield the previous owner constructed. Apparently the vibrations and impacts from offroading jostled the K&N intake enough to pop the plug slightly.
So the truck would always start but the ECU must have not been getting a good signal once running so that explains the clicking.
I will anchor the intake better and add more clearance on the sheetmetal guard.
