Filling transfer case thru shifter hole...but where did the oil go?

92 4cyl: Finished clutch job and was refilling fluids: Filled my tranny thru the tranny shifter hole and worked great, started coming out of filler hole at the exact right amount. Then filled the TC at the TC shifter hole and nothing came out of the filler hole after almost 2 qts, put my finger in there and dry? Where did the oil go??? Is there a void between the tranny & TC. Nothing more came out of the tranny filler hole. Where is the oil???

There is a substantial void in the rear of the transmission case on a W56 type tranny for sure. I don't know what type tranny is in your truck.

I recently filled the transfer case in my W56 equpped 1987 4Runner thru the shifter hole and it did require more than 2 quarts before the oil came out of its filler hole.

My case was completely dry , as I had it apart for installation of 4.7 gears.

It is a W56, so the oil is stuck in the void now? Will this cause any problems?

No, the void is meant to be filled with oil up to the level of the t. case filler hole. It is necessary to lube the large bearings in the low range reduction part of the case.

Keep adding oil slowly so that everything can equalize. When there's enough, it will flow out the filler plug opening.
