i have stock manifolds, stock cat and a flowmaster super 44, gives you that deep tone without being to loud, headers and highflow cat are on my list

IMHO the 22R(E) is an UGLY sounding motor. I've tried glasspacks & baffle mufflers. In the end, I REALLY like what I have now.

I have the Pacesetter header into 2 1/4" w/ no cat and a stock, decayed muffler. It's quiet, but you can hear the exhaust if you know what to listen for. Prior to I had the Pacesetter w/ a Thrush baffle muffler. Too loud... way too loud and it did not sound graceful.

My question is...how do these trucks sound with headers an exhaust? Rice rocket gone bad? Quiet deep growl?

I'm an old man of 31 years now and don't need to wake every baby in the neighborhood anymore (especially my own). A little rumble is okay...but I want it on the same side.

2nd question. Does getting rid of the catalytic converter make a difference? Sound or power wise? Mine is shot and if I don't have to install one I wont. Not required for my year. Anything older than 1988 gets a free ride....safe inspection only.
The stock manifold and downpipe are actually a nice compromise between HP and torque. If you're not tuning it with new cam and such, I would probably say stay stock.

Having said that, my 88 has the stock exhaust into a CA legal Magnaflow converter, 2.25" pipe out and a magnaflow muffler. People say it's noticible but not annoying, not raspy; it is deeper in tone than what they would expect from a 4 banger.

Even with my stock manifold and no cat, mine sounded way too loud and annoying...maybe I'm getting old. But then again, it didn't have that low, deep rumble of a v8 w/headers in front of the muffler that I like...

Music to my ears...
