Exhaust Manifold??

I am looking on buying a new exhaust manifold for my 86' yota 4x4 pickup, with a 22r. I have looked at a couple, one being Hedman the other being a Hooker Header. The Hedman seems to be offering a little more horsepower and better fuel economy, I'm just trying to find out what my best bet would be for around $200-$250 on the best exhaust manifold, from someone with a little more experience on the subject, thanks.

I'm not an exhaust expert but I have some opinions.

I think the stock Toyota exhaust manifold is pretty darn efficient the way it is. Don't think you will get any bang for your buck with an aftermarket header unless you are running at higher rpms and have a longer duration cam and higher compression.

I'd spend the money instead on making sure your carb is in good shape, maybe checking the catalytic converter for restriction and an overall tune up if it's been awhile.

I know you asked about a header but maybe consider getting a performance cam instead of the header, depending on what you use your truck for. The 22R was designed as a very reliable low rpm high torque (relatively speaking) engine and any modifications should enhance the positive features it already has rather than trying to turn it into a high rpm engine. I'd base my cam selection on that.

I noticed that no one else has responded to your post, so maybe my response will get some exhaust gurus to reply.

I just put a 261C cam from engnbldr and it really only made a small difference, you really need to do a new exhaust and a cam for any real improvement I think.

I've heard nothing but good reviews of the LC Engineering header, so I am probably going to go with them when the time comes. I'll probably get a shop to bend me up a 2 1/4 inch exhaust and weld it up myself to go with the header.

From what I've read and my experience with the new head with oversized valves, and cam is that
any one of these mods won't do much for you without the other. Just pick em up as you can afford them and be happy with them in the end.

PS
I would spend money fixing anything broken before you mod anything.

My original exhaust manifold was warped, picked up a new one from rockauto for about $60. It came with all the gaskets and hardware. I would highly recommend the Remflex exhaust gasket. After replacing a few, Remflex works perfectly.
