engine wont rev past 2000rpm?
What could cause this? idles good and revs clean until 2000rpm, then acts like it has a rev limiter or somthing keeping it from reving higher. What yall think? thanks

22r or 22re?
Check the catalytic converter, might be clogged. |
Sounds like timing issue. Check your spark plugs. Rotor, stuff like that.
|
valve adjustments, cam timing, ignition timing, ignitor (or related circuits)...
vacuum leaks, fuel filter... spark plug wires, distributor cap or rotor arcing out |
Incorrectly installed TPS as well... seen it happen twice on the 22re and had the same issue you describe. Have you had it off recently?
|
Take off the cummins rev limiter?
|
AFM is sticking.
|
Fuel filter.....
|
RPM Fuel shut off
There is a test procedure in the FSM linked in this forum for a RPM Fuel shut off. It indicates that after unplugging the TPS and jumpering the bottom two wires, the fuel shut-off should activate at about 2130RPM and drop down to 1900 repeatedly. If that is occuring, it could very likely point to a fault in the TPS.
Just a thought, but I'm new to these trucks.... |
^^ Hmmm... never would have thought of that^^

The "rev limiter" remark, as in a rythmic up and down rev with the skinny pedal held down, leads me to believe a timing issue is to blame, more than likely caused incorrect information from a sensor that can alter the ingnition timing... leading me directly to the TPS... just my .02 :great: |
I did take the tps off recently. will get one and switch it out next. Fuel filter isn't that old. Thanks again for all the input!

make sure its right to spec with the way it sits on there to just a though
|
Ok. swaped out the tps because the one that came off drags a little if i twist the spring. Still has the rev problem.
But just for kicks i unpluged the connector and it reved the way it was suposed to. Could it be installed wrong still? it seemed pretty self explanitory on how it fits on, i lined up the small groves on the sensor to the throttle gate piece....idk. Ill try the timing next. |
when I installed the tps on my 88, I noticed that the throttle shaft has tabs that push on the tabs in the tps, so when installing it, I rotated the tps in the direction of throttle rotation then slid it on the throttle body. then I rotated it the other way until when I let it go, the spring in it caused the tps to rotate on it's own, meaning it was pushing against the throttle tabs.
then I put the screws in it and snugged them down and connected the plug. at this point, I started the engine and bumped the tps sensor until the idle speed dropped. I bumped it both ways very slightly until I got it right at the point the speed dropped and tightened the screws. following that, I put a jumper in the diagnostic TE1 and E1 terminals to make sure the ECU was getting the IDL signal (the rpm's drop even more) and checked the timing. |
/\
that's the easiest way to do it; as close as you can get it without a multimeter |
thanks for the help. ill mess with it again this week sometime.
