Engine...what did I do wrong!? DESPERATE
 

Ok, first off this is my THIRD profile. I cannot reset passwords or get into the others. No worries, i hav a lot of email addresses. :)

I pulled my head off after the gasket let go on cylinder #2. I didn't check the torque on the head bolts after the first 1000mi of new engine. They didn't need to be broken free when I removed the head. Here are bullet points to keep this easy to read.

• head removed and checked/cleaned at machine shop
• engine NEVER overheated prior to head going down.
• radiator blew from pressure...water jacket was blocked up
• cleaned block surface...reinstalled head with Indian Head Shellac
• set timing
• pulled drain plug and removed all old coolant
• re filled coolant and oil (When the gasket let go, oil/water never mixed! Coolant ran into #2 cylinder and prevented it from firing)
• valve lashing not completely set but it was checked when cold
• engine has GREAT compression when we rotated the crank

After install:

• engine starts
• clean exhaust (no steam)
• Cabin heat works
• idle is rough for a while then will eventually start to settle out

WHEN I TRIED TO DRIVE IT, THERE WAS "NO PEDAL". THE TRUCK WOULD MOVE BUT FELT LIKE ALMOST NO POWER. I went down the street but turned around because it just didn't want to move. There was a very small spot in rev range where the truck felt like it had power. It jumped a little then fell back. There was oil running down the passenger side of the motor. Presumably from the oil filter but I couldn't really tell.

1. If the timing was off that much...would it run?
2. if the timing was off that much...idle with out any clanking or banging?

WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD THIS BE?! My rig has been sitting for 4 months now...PLEASE HELP!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot. Oil is NOT being forced out of the dipstick tube.

Have you put a timing light on it? You will know if its off or not. Start simple, double check vacuum hoses, check for vacuum leak with starter fluid, firing order, the simple cheap stuff. Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? Is it tripping any codes? They don't always flash a fault light.

Have not tried a timing light yet. (would timing explain any of these problems other than no pedal?)

Have not replaced the fuel filter. Hose was leaking...I just trimmed it back and reinstalled it.

Timing could explain a lot of it. Clean the oil up good and then drive it for a few minutes, or just let it idle. Find the oil leak, and confirm its from the oil filter. If not thats not a good thing to let go unchecked.

Remember timing controls you spark advance or retard. To early or late and it could be gutless and rough running. If you have a harbor freight near you their light are cheap and will get the job done.

Im not great with these motors but have been through them a few times. Got about another hour at the airport before i board. So i will watch this for a bit. Good luck.

It sounds like you are a tooth off on the timing chain

thanks guys! work has me hemmed up. hopefully I can get by to check this stuff before the weekend. (truck broke down near my buddies house so not just a quick run outside). I will post what I find!!!

My ideas:
Big vac leak, egr stuck open could do it.
blocked inlet to AFM, not enough air= no power. if there is a plastic duct going from the air filter box to radiator support, make sure it's not blocked off.(ask me how I know)
oil leak is unrelated.

Turn the crank another turn and it will come around. Crank turns TWICE for one rev of the cam.

Bet both #1 valves are NOT closed now, but they will be when you turn the crank around again.

Think what you're seeing is 100% normal.

but at this point it is on #3 plug exactly. Turn the crank 1 more revolution to 0deg mark?

Yes, that's exactly what I said. The rotor will come round another 180*, to near #1 position.

This won't tell you too much. You need to verify the marks on the cam are just short of 12 O'clock next.

On the timing light you cannot see the thinning mark at all. I will rotate the notch one more rotation. Brb

It is not clear that you have a correct picture of an effective troubleshooting sequence.

Have you verified that the cam position is correct when #1 cylinder is at top dead center with both valves closed???

pulled valve cover. Timing is correct, top dead on the chain. Gotta start looking at the valve lashing etc now I guess. Never pulled a motor apart alone before. ....

The dimple doesn't go at twelve it sits half a tooth to the side, the cam dowel goes at 12.

Here are some tips..
Put the distributor cap on, with a sharpie draw a line down the barrel of number one and on to the distributor for reference.

If you go past the 0° timing mark you can not "just" turn it counter clockwise, you have to go all the way around again twice. If you go backwards the cam doesn't move due to the slack in the chain.

When you insert the distributor you want the adjustment notch to be centered over the bolt hole..

Post pictures of the crank indicator, cam sprocket, and distributor after you put the reference line on it.. Buy, rent or borrow a timing light you absolutely need one, you can not just "eyeball" ignition timing.

Thanks for all the help fellas. I have already pulled the valve cover off. I bought the harbor freight light and timing was good before I puked off the valve cover. Bad weather here now so anything more will have to wait. I'll keep you all posted!!
