Engine compatibility
Hey everyone, Im Josh. New to this forum but not new to forums. Yes I have been searching for the last 2 days..
I bought an '88 pickemup with a 22r in it. Blown up (more details later). Picked up another 22r off of craigslist. The Cl motor is defiantly older than an '88, has dual row timing chain and round-ish valve cover. Everything looks the same other than the exhaust which poses a problem as the '88 EGR equipment doesnt seem to fit the older 22r. I thought they were all the same? Any ideas what I can do? Also, the owner of the truck said his daughter ran it out of oil and was making a horrible noise (owner is not a car guy). I pulled the valve cover off and timing chain is waaay loose and guides are broken. This is exactly the noise I was hearing when I tried starting it. Think I should throw a new timing chain on and call it a day? Or bearings might be toast from lack of oil? Sorry for the novel and thanks for any help. Josh |
not much you can do with an older 22r and newer. they changed the engine design slightly in 85/86 and little exchanges between the two.

So I basically need an 85-88 22r. Will an early 22re work? I have yet to read anything about these subtle differences.

A swap would be cool, but this truck is just a commuter. I have an 03 Tundra thats the play toy. Im looking for the least expensive rout to get this running.

Can you swap the exhaust manifold over from your old engine?

Possibly, I couldnt get a real good look at the 83 motor last night. I know the exhaust manifold gaskets are different between the years. All I need is the EGR to work for california smog.

the problem you'll end up having in cali is that since it's an 88 truck, you'll have to have the smog equipment from the 88 truck even if you install an older engine.
if you can get the manifolds from the 88 to bolt up to the 83 engine, and if you pass tail pipe tests, you should be okay. but I doubt it since the 83 head is different as you can tell by the gaskets being different. a 22re could be modified to be used in a carb'd vehicle but the cam profiles are different and you may not pass smog due to that. |
also, since you said the chain was loose and guides broke on the 88, you may want to focus on that engine. if the chain hasn't worn through the timing cover into the water pump area, you may be okay replacing the chain and guides and cleaning out the oil pan, and checking the bearings to see if the crank is damaged.
