Engine Chain Condition
I got into the motor today. Adjsuted the valves, they were a touch tight when i started checked, now they are in spec. .008 intake and .012 exhaust on a warm engine. With that said, i started checknig the timnig chain. All plastic guides look new without any wear as i can see. I rotated the engine and checked the chain condition and it looked pretty new. There was no discoloration from say old oil cooking on it. So i am not sure what to think about it. I still get a rattle from the chain when i first crank the thing up, but only after it has been sitting for a while and the oil drains back down. But if the motor is warm or recently started and stopped i wont have the noise. So should i worry anymore? This is my first yota 4cyl so i guess i could be overreacting from the noises.

when inspecting the guides you need to look at where they bolt up, the driver side guide will break at the bolt hole and move out creating more room for slack in the chain.
On an old chain it is reasonable to expect some noise on start up but if the guides and everything looks OK then it should not be a problem. |
