engine advice?!?
I'm rockin a 87 2wd 22re 2brl, stick with the 22re or swap for 22r fuel injected?
|
Just a heads up the 22r is carbureted and the 22re is fuel injected.
|
yeah, 22r is carburated, 22re is fuel injected. What happened? Why are you considering swapping? We need more background. Just purely changing for a performance increase isn't worth it.
|
If the existing motor (I'm guessing its either a 22r or a 22re that someone has converted back to carb) is fine, no point in swapping it out for a pretty much equal 4-banger.
If its blown up or something and you don't mind wiring, I'd throw in a 22RE or 3RZ in a heartbeat. Fuel injection is awesome! |
I hate a re they got to many electronics plus a r can be tuned a lot easier
Edit: scratch that I dont hate them I like them I just like the r more |
Stetson: I know what you mean, I really didn't want an RE when I got my truck (too much electronic crap involved in 'em :hillbill:) but since I got mine, I've got a new respect for them.... Still easier to work on than these newer trucks you need a masters degree in IT to work on, and just as hard to kill as the 22R motors.

The Re is a very simple EFI design. There's really not much to them. You have four injectors, a fuel rail and electric pump and just a handful of sensors. Very easy to do a r to re swap if you have a donor to scavenge from. It can be done in a weekend if your familiar with the setup. And the wiring is simple if you are swapping harness and all. Everything is color coded. Very very simple my friend. Don't be hatin the setup hate the makers lol..... |
the re is one of the simplest fuel injected motors your gonna find. Sure the carb'd is nice beause of simplicity but really your only adding a few extra things to be fuel injected and not have to worry about stalling out while wheeling.
Ultimately your gonna wanna stick to what you feel most comfortable with. But if your asking what others would pick. 22RE > 22R |
Yea I've driven and worked on both, both are great motors I just like the r better just personal preference that's all
