emissions test fail
 

hello,

i just bought a 1993 toyota pickup, sr5,4wd,manual and went to get the emissions tested and it failed due to high CO levels...what does this mean?

I was in the same fix last year when I bought the same truck ('93 Pickup SR5 3VZE) and it failed emissions. You will find a lot of good information by searching this forum. Your best resource is the factory service manual which is available here:

My truck had high HC which I ultimately tracked down to a burned exhaust valve. I don't know about high CO, but you should check for ECM codes as a first step. Here is the page in the manual that describes how to do it:

had it checked out today....might just be the o2 sensor but also found a laundry list of stuff wrong with it!
-new radiator (already new that)
-idler arm and pitman arm need to be replaced
-power steering gear box replacement
-rear differential needs new gasket
-new tires

repairs will be as much as what i paid for the truck!! awww man!

Are you getting any trouble codes that indicate the O2 sensor is bad?

Check your air filter, it's a lot cheaper than the O2 sensor.

You could save bunch of money by doing some of the work yourself. Replacing the radiator is pretty easy and replacing the rear diff gasket ought to be straight forward too. Read through the FSM on the other items.

high co is an indication of a rich condition. i would check and make sure the ignition system is in good working condition. it could possibly be an o2 sensor, and it potentially could be a catalytic converter, but usually a converter will also have high hc with co.

im not sure about the ignition system yet...still looking into everything. i am looking up parts and was wondering where one my truck it would say if it was a dlx or base model?

I thought you said it was an SR5? If so, then it's neither, it's an SR5.

But if you wanted to verify that, check the model code. It should have an "S" or "G" as the fourth letter after the dash.

Examples: VZN110L-CRMGEA or RN130L-GKLSEA

That has happened to me. However, I went to a different testing station within the city, let it idle, didn't shut it off and it passed. Could be the equipment.
