Red face EMERGENCY my 94 4runner just went screwy

i need desperate diagnostic help

Im driving home from work just about to get home i hear bad clicking and it looks like my rpms are dropping fast as soon as i let off the gas it did idle at 5000 rpms instead of normal 7500 at a stop it seemed to stop clattering at a faster speed 30+ opened the hood nothing looked bad but my front right corner panel was extremely hot next to the battery. i did realize right before this happened the defrost was off but it was one the hot setting (so it blows a slight hot air that heated up my foot

Previous problems that may have led to this. My car would read a low idle oil pressure and felt hot but the temp gauge read normal

please help

Error code 71 is for the EGR valve. Remove the battery connections for 15 mins, that will clear the code. Drive and see if it comes back.

As for the clicking, when were the valves last adjusted? When was the last tune up?

ya it kinda sounds like bbs shaking in a metal can

i just noticed my shroud around my rad fan broke at a bolt and could have been clicking but when i was driving it sounded like the clatter was coming from under the engine

i fixed the shroud with zip ties

also does anyone recommend disconnecting the vac line to the egr valve, and if so do i cap it check out the last reply to this post on the bottom of the link https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...e-help-147088/

fix the shroud problem. it's possible the engine knock sensing circuit is picking up the noise and confusing it with detonation, and the altering your timing causing the RPM's to drop.

so, fix the broken things you can see first, then work from there.

Theres an engine knock sensor?

basically if that shroud was knocking the engine reads a noise and vibration and adjusts firing

yes, there is a knock sensor. if it hears noises that are similar to detonation it will cause the ECU to retard the timing.
and plastic slapping against plastic can have a sound similar to detonation.
