egr problems

so I got an egr code yesterday and I bought supplies to cut it out. I took out the egr and capped all the vacuum lines and cut out some sheet metal for the egr holes. Im not sure about the 10k resistor but i think it is for the temp sensor right? anyway it idles rough as crap now.

what did I miss?
do I need to do something with the vacuum switching valves?

on my old truck(mitsubishi) all I did was cap the hole with some sheet metal and left everything else alone and it was fine PLEASE HELP!!! I need to drive this thing

The 10k resistor is for the sensor. What did you cap the vacuum lines with? Sounds like a vacuum leak. I just put bolts in my lines, and did not touch any of the valves, and I currently have no problem.

I bought the correct size caps it is idleing very low like 300 and surging can i just bump up the idle? this should have been such a simple operation. arrrrggggghhhh!!

Are you sure they are not leaking? Also, did you put gaskets on the sheet metal? I used 1/4" plate and band new gaskets for my block offs. If the block off is leaking, that is also a vacuum leak. No, I do not believe you can bump up the idle, besides, I'm pretty sure it would still surge even if you could bump it up.

I am thinking to double check for vacuum leaks as well.

Jason is right.. you need gaskets behind your block off plates.

Also, IIRC, when I pulled off some brackets related to the EGR, some of the bolts actually went all the way through the intake. Meaning, no bolt... huge vacuum leak. Make sure you don't have anything obvious left open.

yea i just used my old gaskets, the bottom one is metal, and put some rtv to make sure. I put it back and it is running fine so im pretty sure you guys are right with the vacuum leak the top plate(on plenum) is not held down very well b/c of the shape the side that is shaped like ^ is not supported very well and i believe that is my problem. I think I will cut the tube off and use the original brace to bolt it down. thanks again for the assist and quick response. I have pics of the whole thing I will post later but im going to dinner with the gf.

On mine, they were all studs, no bolts.

I left mine on, so if I get pulled over, have to do emissions, or sell the truck, I can put it back on.

florida has no emissions plus I just rebuilt it so I have a feeling it is not going to make a difference.

If you mean you would pass emissions w/o because the motor is new, you are probably wrong.

bigtrucknwheels 04-05-2008 03:44 PM

what do we gain from removing the EGR valve?

jason191918 04-05-2008 05:43 PM

Mine was sticking open, thus contaminating my intake air under throttle, and I'm too cheap to buy a new one.
