Do I have to take off the cylinder head just to replace the dampers? I'd like to do this myself but I'm afraid I'll need like 23 different special tools or something crazy.

If anyone has done this themselves, what were some useful tricks? I need to get back on the road soon so anything to make this go faster will help.

You can change them by just removing the timing chain cover, but when you reinstall it you risk the chance of bunching the head gasket. It can be done; it's just tricky.

As mentioned above, not criming the HG is the hard part...
Recommend replacing the chain, guides, and gears while you're in there.
No special tools required. Pan has to be lowered, but not removed.
I'm in town if you require some direction...

Hey! I still need to call you. I finally got the turbo for my turbo kit and then the damper breaks, my front axle broke something and I have a flat tire and another one has a nail in it!! I can't help but to feel rather unlucky at the moment.

I understand.. I blew the paper gasket out of my intake manifold yesterday at about 13psi... Blew water everywhere!
That dampner isn't much fun, but it is a straight forward job.. Make sure you retain the orientation of crank, chain, and your head..
