drive shaft problems
 

I have a 1992 pick up and have had issues with it vibrating. I found out it was my drive shaft and that i needed a new carrier bearing. bought a cheap one and it lasted 2 weeks. So the toyota OEM is $400 and a few people told me for that money you could have a custom drive shaft made and ditch the carrier bearing thats always going to be an issue. so thats what i did. Got my new drive shaft today installed it and went for a test drive. The vibration is now WORSE!! Im at a lost here. What do i do? put the old one back on and try the toyota OEM carrier bearing and be out the money for the one piece drive Shaft or do i try and make the One Piece custom drive shaft work?

400 bucks for a carrier bearing? You got ripped off. Who made you a driveshaft? Did they not balance it?

no the OEM is 400 i paid 100 for the cheap one that didnt last. Tom Woods Custom Drive Shafts. They were closed by the time I took the truck for a test drive but there are weights on it so i believe its been balanced

Defiantly take the shaft back to them and tell them it's not balanced. I would think there is some kind of warranty with it.

Yeah that is my first option to try. Just curious though from what i have read and researched The one piece should bolt right up work right? It fit right and Bolted to the flanges on both ends just fine.

Yea a one price should work assuming they made it right.

Ok well thanks for your help makes feel a little better. Ill get with them tomorrow and hopefully find out what the issue is.

Make sure there is no play in the Ujoints, I have seen some Ujoint repairs and they use the wrong size bearings with just a slight play in them.

I have had several new drive shafts built all bolted on and where good to go.

I have also used Napa and other carrier bearings with no issues.

Just how did you decide it was the drive shaft ??

Did you need the torch to get the old carrier bearing off ??:welder:

I rebuilt the the old drive shaft with new u joints. Problem was still there. Had the drive shaft rebalanced still a vibration. Replaced the carrier bearing with a cheap one and the vibration stopped for about 5000 miles. Then it came back. U joints were still tight. That when I decided to ditch the carrier bearing and go with a one piece drive shaft.

when u put a center suport bering on the driveshaft. you have to be carefull that especaly on toys u make sure there not backwards or upside down in youre case you probly put the flange on wrong the driveshaft hasto be in phase if your one tooth off on flange toull get a vibration check the alingment of rear to front an make sure the u joints are even like if you put driveline on floor with i=ujoint caps even on rear the front ujoint should b even with rear section pm me if u need picks

u got to be carefull with one peice driveshafts the dealers wont warinty and on some it does damage $1200 mistake and im a builder

Call the company that built the drive shaft they said to bring it back and they will make sure it got balanced right

Right I did make sure the drive shaft was in phase and that the carrier bearing was installed correctly. Like I said after all new parts the vibration went away then after 5,000 miles it came back and I had excessive play in the carrier bearing. That's when I decided to go the one piece route.

Driveshafter what do you mean some it can cause damage?

Well I took the drive shaft back to them. They did a triple check balance on it and they said they added a few weights. Picked it up and bolted it back on. Still have a bad vibration. Not sure were to go from here! How do I go about checking angles? If I went from a 2 piece with a carrier bear to a one piece the angle on the pinion can't be the same. Any help would be great thanks

driveshafter here hey ive ran into this problem before what happened is the pinion angle was off but not up and down if you look at the rear dif it might nit be in a straight line with transfer case thats why the put a cv on the rear section what i ended up doing was putting a cv on the dif side you're angle should be a negative 1 to 3 degrees from the driveshaft if the rear diff isn't lined up then you must go with the cv setup the kias are the same toys are to so pm me with questions or call i can talk you through it a lot easier:rockin:

Great thanks for your help! I also ended up running up the street to a mechanic and he said that the angles don't look to bad. He just looked didn't measure. He said my rear end is shot and that's where he would start to try and fix the vibration.

1. Ever heard of punctuation? Spelling? Grammar in general?

2. How did you ascertain that?

3. They as in who? Toyota? Ummm...no they didn't. And that wouldn't have been why. Even if they did.

4. I bet you think you're some kind of driveshaft genius huh?

5. Unfortunately, when it come to Toyotas, you obviously aren't.

OP, how much is the rear suspension lifted? More than 0"? If so, THAT'S why you need to have a CV installed on the one-piece. And don't do as suggested by bolting it on backwards. Since that wouldn't do anything beneficial. And would probably negate any beneficial effects of having the CV installed in the first place. That's one of the more assinine things I've heard mentioned on this site.

Rear end is shot? Yeah...not likely. Sounds like someone else doesn't have a clue what he's talking about either.

Bottom line: Lift your 92 PU, the rear DS is gonna vibrate. From lack of a CV on it. And in extreme cases, 2"+ suspension lift, from lack of angled shims correct the pinion angle too.

No, I don't have 20 years experience building driveshafts. Yes, I do own 2 lifted pre-96 LWB Toyota PUs(with one-piece rear DS's). Case closed!

EDIT: Since it's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities(and because I don't know enough about your rig), the same applies to a lowered suspension.
