Dome Light

I have an 88 Runner and an 86 Pickup and both of them do the same thing. The passagers door will turn on the dome light but the drivers wont. Anyone have same problem? Any fix? Ive tried to put a new switch in it also and they both work the key-in-ignition buzzer too.

i think thats the way it is.... mines the same way.

Mine will sometimes work and sometimes won't.. I think it's a short on the passenger side because sometimes if my passenger gets out and slams the door the driver's side works.. very annoying.

mine both work. just replaced bulb so i'm sure they both work on an 87 4runner

Mine is the same. Passenger door will make dome light come on but driver's door won't. I figured it was just my truck.

Mine works fine but bassenger side wen door is open buzzer wont make the noise lights work on both sides

There might be a short somewhere, beacuse only the driver door should operate the key in buzzer.
Ok, if you look at the diagram, there is a diode in the circuit between the two switches (early model shown). The passenger door comes first in the circuit, hardwired to the door switch, then to the driver door, than through the diode. Looks like if the diode is open the driver door won't work at all. Looks like if that diode is shorted than either door will make the buzzer ring.

It is that or the seat belt timer/buzzer might have a malfunction inside if it. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help. I was a little misleading to begin with. My drivers door makes the buzzer sound only if the keys are in the ignition. Ive never had a seat belt warning buzzer. The dome light only comes on on the passagers side. With that said both door jam switchs are working. Where is this diode?

Not sure on that. I will try to find out. I was reading off of the diagram in the Haynes manual.

What I can tell you is one of the best investments I ever made was an annual subscription to Mitchell1 for dealing with stuff like this. But I never had it for the yota, that has been the beauty of owning it.
I will consider getting that now if I can help anyone else out with it. Don't use AllData, They stink.

Ok I am getting closer. I an looking at a diagram of my '94. This might be in the center of the dash if you have power windows. That is the RH door. THe LH door diode is in side the intergration relay on the back of the fuse box in the cab. It looks like the wires from the door switches go into that relay.

Ok, that is the seatbelt timer module as well. Hmmm... these have a habit of sprouting leg's because the idiot light stays on. I remember now, thats why I never fooled with mine. It is still lit on the dash after all these years. You are asking me to remember somthing that happened 9 years ago.

How we doing, YotaBoy? Inquiring minds wanna know.

Ive had the truck for 8 years and its never worked. I just got the 86 about 6 months ago and it does it. My friend has an 88 and his does the same thing. I was just wondering if somebody knows what the problem is. It seams common.

timebandit Jan 16, 2007 02:34 PM

Well I might. Take a look at what I said above, just see if it is missing. Mine has always worked fine.

if there is a short in the buzzer that might be causing your problem. the drivers side dome light switch goes through your buzzer. if thats not it maybe you could just go to radio shack and get some wire and a 7.5 amp in-line fuse and just re-wire it.

The seat belt warning buzzer has on that model I recall a switch under the driver's seat if you disconnect the switch the buzzer does not work. I know I disconnected mine when I used to be a K-9 guard in and out of truck all the time.
On the 94 the switch is in the latch and those cables can easily corrode and or break... again no buzzer.

somtimes my switch gets sticky, just have to push it in a few times with my finger and its good for another week or 2 :)
