Much the same way as OS valves or larger exhaust. Bigger opening=more flow/less resistence=more efficient engine.
Simply put, it helps your engine breathe better. And on it's own is probably the most worthwhile intake mod for throttle body engines. You'll likely get more added performance from it than from whatever ISR/FIPK mod could ever hope to gain you. OS intake valves would be more effective with it, than without it I would think.
