Dumbarse. Sorry man but that really dumb, I've had a truck fall of a jack.

so which stands and jacks?

I have a 4th Gen 4Runner and my wife has a civic (for now), so what jack (if not the truck's) and what jack stands would you guys recommend?
And what height? There's the Torin T43006 3 Ton SUV's but they are a bit tall, and I'm not sure if the added height is helpful given the stock bottle jack.

Like a lot of people have said, go overkill on the stands. I use 6 ton Torins for my 94 4runner now. If I were you, I'd just invest in separate sets for the civic and your truck, since it might be hard to find a shorter stand that has a good weight capacity to hold the runner. Be safe!
I had a close call last summer with some cheap (20 dollars) Craftsman jack stands that were just barely rated to hold my truck. One of the legs on the base pretty much folded and the thing tipped off the stands. Luckily I wasn't under it, just head poked under the rear bumper. Got a pretty good smack and my rear axle hit the ground. Ended up having to have a tow truck come pick the axle up for me since my jack wasn't low enough and promptly drove to Sears to rip them a new one.

Wow! That's scary. I got a great deal on 3 ton stands at home depot, and that makes me want to return them in exchange for some other 6 ton.

I always just give the vehicle a hard push/pull in several places after its on stands.

If it rocks or doesn't feel solid adjust the stands as necessary.

I forget now if my stands are 2, 3, or 4 ton... I'm leaning more toward 2.. but I never use less than 2 and have only had my truck completely off the ground once, on 4 stands and the floor jack.. and unless it gets in the way, I also keep the floor jack snug to frame on whichever side I'm working, front or rear. I like to give her the ole shake test. I grab the side of the bed and shake as hard as I can. If she don't fall from that, then she's probably not gonna succumb to gravity.

never trust your life to a single safety point. always have a back-up. you can buy solid concrete blocks for a few dollars, old railroad ties, whatever. always have a failsafe.

good sized jack stands being the runner has more ground clearance are hard to come by sometime make sure you dont try to set short blocks like 2x4's under your stands makes it far too unstable, either drive on ramps or large capacity and height stands or blocks like a GOOD 12X12 from the saw mill

I'd rather be under my Runner knowing it's done right because I'm the one doing it, than be at the stealership's waiting room not knowing what those people are doing to her.

Like someone in A forum once said, "Having someone else work on your truck is like having someone work on your woman then you have to pay him to do it." - LOL!

IT helps that many things we need to do for maintenance and repair can be done without need to jack her up. To grease zerks, all one needs to do is lift it a hair off the floor to turn the driveshaft. Well... I can change oil and tranny fluid on our Corolla without having to jack it up, either
