Do you have alternator whine in your 22re?
Backstory: starting /warming up my (22re) engine was making a pretty awful racket, due to all the belts squealing.
What I did:
I checked belt tension and it was poor, figured I'd pull the belts because they were quite worn/cracking. When I went to re-adjust the belt tension I made 3 lovely discoveries:
1)The tension pulley for the air fan no longer had an adjuster bolt head (it was snapped right off, bolt shank was still threaded in).
2)The (upper) pinch bolt hole on the aluminum alternator body for tensioning the alternator belt was completely stripped.
3)Water pump gasket seeping/dripping.
I found the super long tensioner bolt for the tension pulley at nix99 and picked up a water pump+gasket while I was there too. I picked up a heli-coil knock off at O'Reilly and a fresh drill bit for 30 bucks (perma-coil, "the other name in the thread repair business"). Swapped out the water pump, pulled alternator. I drilled, tapped, and added the perma coil steel threads to the aluminum alternator housing, grabbed a new bolt and washer for good measure, and now it snugs up no problem.
I took the truck out for a test run, and HOLY CRAP it has soo much more power, esp on the hills/low end....I'm assuming my electrical system wasn't able to get my plugs hot enough...night and day difference!
My only concern is how much noise the alternator is making. Its a very noticeable whine, almost like I've got a supercharger or something.
Obviously it had nowhere near enough tension with the stripped out tensioner bolt, and now its working again properly. The question is, do you hear your alternator spinning in your 22re's?
I know the alternator was replaced 4/20/07. Its listed as a"14668/30-0275 AutoLite IMP ALT 6131791" on the form from CSK PROSHOP auto parts. Looks like he paid 139.99 for the alternator and 37 more bucks for them to strip the crap out of it and bust his tensioner pulley bolt for good measure (just a guess)
So...do you guys hear a pretty noticeable alternator whine in your 22re's?
Or should I be looking for a replacement?
Readers Digest:
New/properly tensioned belts no longer squeal...truck has more power...but alternator is much louder/noticeable now!

My old alternator died and I put a new napa one in. It whined REALLY bad for the first 50 miles, then it quieted down a bit. But I can still hear it when accelerating hard.

So I looked it up online, and it looks like CSK is a subsidiary of Checkers/Schucks/Kraken/O'Reilly... so this is a lower quality non-oem alternator.
I think I'm going to yank an alternator off a wreck since they're pretty easy to pull. Then I'll either do it myself, or get it rebuilt, while I'm waiting for this one to burn itself out once I do the sr5 gauge cluster I'll have a volt meter which may tell volumes about what is going on...should've had the stupid alternator tested while it was off....

From another thread, seems like these guys do a good job on alternator rebuilds...
