Question diverter valve removal

Alright, so i tore out the longblock 22re out of my 90 PU, and i got bored taking a pepsi break so i picked up the hose connected from the lower intake manifold, to the diverter valve, then what would end up at the air box. I trumpeted into one end with my lips and the sound was significantly dampened by that honking ballast.

I know the function of this vavle is to close upon decceleration to keep from backfiring ... but is it necessary? will the car actually backfire? isn't that what the stop screw that falls into the ballast near the passenger side of the throttle body for... cuz that engine would sound like a monster if it were feesible to remove or alter that ballast.

ideas???

If you are talking about the dashpot that rests against the throttle lever and lets the throttle close slowly, then you can do without it. I have mine backed all the way down to where it doesn't have and function to it now and have never had it backfire. But mine is a V6, so can't really say for a 4.

not the dashpot ... if you trace the hard piping and the rubber hosing ... the tubing brings hot exhaust air from the manifold around the beack of the head into the intake manifold, and then into that ballast. Its looks like a squashed ball ... short and fat ...

not the egr, wow... i am really bad at explaining this... that comes out of the head ... the pipe come directly from the exhaust, LITERALLY around the back of the head then attaches to the LOWER IM. ill get some pics

okay ... well thanks for the term now can ya help me with my question.. i want to remove it ... but ive heard rumor... more like spec, that it's there to stop backfire .... then again ... im looking for a real agressive throttle sound ... ready have the k&n filter coupled with a drilled air box housing ... so the wa wa wa wa wa that all 22res get after coming down from a rev at idle and the same at 2000 RPM is dampened by this "pair valve" .. so i wanna get rid of it.

All the pair valve does is give your hot exhaust gases a source of fresh oxygen. That way the gases can continue burning as they enter the exhaust,
this helps reduce hydrocarbons and supposedly speeds exhaust velocity. I dont think removing it will make it sound any meaner...

really ... well just as an experiment ill do it ... ill make sure to note sound levels to more than just my biased ears.... and id just like to know ... where did you get that info from... id like to read up on it! :-)

Pretty sure its notated in Haynes manual, and systems like this are pretty common on those years vehicles, some use a pump to push air into it, the valve on the 22re uses natural suction effect of the exhaust to pull in air.
I think haynes calls it a air suction system in the book.

Yes, if it keeps blowing ait intot he exhaust on decel, loud pop. I suppose you can remove ti all together, but leave it in if it works fine.
