disable steering lock in a first gen?

My first gens steering wheel is locked and I cant turn the key. This has been a problem that has just gotten worse. At first I would have to turn the wheel side to side to get the key to turn ,but now the key will not turn. I think the lock will not disingadge . How can I disable the steering lock? I dont want to tear up the ignition. Thanks Corbit.

The little button wont go down. The key can be removed , and when put back in feels like it is hitting all the tumblers. It feels like the wheel lock is stuck. How can I disable the wheel lock ?

See if you can remove the lock (key inserted, turned slightly and press the release button under the ignition switch (remove the plastic trim for access). Might just be gummed up inside. All the locking mechanism is inside there.

Rodger , do you mean the little pin on the ignition that is in line with the wiper switch ,or are you talking about something below the switch. I see a cap almost the size of a quarter below the ignition ,if this is it how do I remove the cap. I am almost ready to get my big hammer and fix it. Thanks for your input , David.

There is a small release pin resessed in the metal surrounding the ignition switch. As I recall it is below the lock cylinder.

Roger ,Thanks for the tip. I pushed the little pin on the ignition while turning the key and prying the ignition and it popped right out. I'll have to get it re keyed. Thanks David.
