CV axles just spinning, hubs locked or not!
22re pickup 4x4 manual hubs.
Front wd has never worked since I bought it. Thinking it was the transfer case or the differential, I turned the front driveshaft by hand and both cv's turned like they are supposed to....
...but, when I put the hubs from "free" to "locked", the same thing happened? On both cv's. From what little about this I know, with the hubs locked, the cv's shouldn't just spin like that?
...Now, I know my cv's are shot. Boots all messed up and they're awful, but would that cause them to just spin freely even if the front wheels are locked? Just worried it's something more serious than the cv's.

I think he meant that there's probably a lot in there, that's why they're screwed up....I'm assuming anyhow.
Well, good...I'm gonna take the wheels off and see what's going on. I know that there's always been just tons of sludge and grease all over the underside of the front. I just didn't know where it was coming from. But I guess that's what happens when the cv's explode, I dunno.

Thanks. That is what I meant, I just worded it wrong. I went wheeling with a friend this weekend who just bought a '69 Bronco. Neither hub would lock. We pulled them apart at the campsite. One had no grease, and the other was totally full. Got rid of most of the grease from the one, and put a little on the other. Then they both locked up fine. I hope your fix is as easy!
