Custom Bumper wish list
 

I am seriously considering building custom front and rear bumpers for my 2nd Gen 4Runner because I could really use a receiver in the front (for pushing the JetSki into the garage), shipping is so expensive, and one of the welders here at work "volunteered" and I figure I can learn some welding at the same time. :welder:

I am leaning towards a plate-type design (like Warn, TJM, or ARB), but will be looking at tube style also. Mostly DD, so needs to be traffic accident proof and not obscenely heavy.

SO, what should I design in? After you did it, what had you wished you had done, etc? Anyone know of any drawings that could serve as a starting point?

For the rear I would like to include a tire carrier - I think I saw one of the guys on here sells all the pivots and everything - Sonoran maybe?

I will draw up on CAD - would anyone possibly be interested in buying the drawings?

Here in Spain we're doing the same, building custom F&R bumpers for 2nd Gens to split fab costs and also engineer costs (We must have it inspected and certified by a lab...).

We're working in some cardboard templates, I'll post pics when we've it semi designed.

nothing else, im really happy with mine, it has a crazy aproach angle..
about a rear bumper, im about 95% sold on it, my only problem is the license plate, i love how bamachem did his..

Ric - to give a little proportion, how tall are your side wings? Looks like 2-3"?

I have dreams to tc. I have a front (TJM-13) but am going to make plans for a sweet rear bumper and have a high school fab class make it for me.

OK, so here's what I'm thinking...
Front: based around a winch capable receiver, so I can maximize approach angle, and don't have to drive around with all the weight of a winch and cable during the week
- front receiver
- no "oblique" surfaces, everything angled so you will push off
- close in to the body to max approach angle
- integrated skid plate
- build brackets to accomodate future body lift

Rear:
- max depart angle
- integrate a rear skid that rolls under the rear so the truck will slide off instead of hanging up
- build brackets to accomodate future body lift

How does that sound?

for the front license plate you could mount the plate to a couple of mag light holder/mount thingies and they just snap on a roller fairlead. It comes off nice and easy, which can be a good or bad thing.

Front license plates is a very infrequently enforced law here in OH. Been pulled over LOTS of times :( in my Impala, and not one officer has uttered a peep about it. So, the new bumper will not have front plate mounts.

Hey tc, sorry to revive an old thread. I know you now have custom front and rear bumpers. I was trying to find pics of your front bumper, but couldn't find exactly where you posted pics. Did you have a buildup for your bumpers that I missed? I remember liking your front bumper alot, and was wondering if you could post some pics. thanks.

I like your idea for the rear bumper. My biggest deal is I want something cosmetically clean, and something that I can still use my HITCH with as well.......which is why I've avoided the tube bumpers so far

IMO armorology has the best looking bumpers on the market, i would have loved one, but they are $$$

No buildup thread, sorry. The goal was MAXIMUM approach angle. I don't know that you can do much better without really sacrificing protection.

The rear bumper is VERY simple. Two rows of 2x2x.120 tubing, very similar to the sliders (4Crawler):

All the exo work was done later, bascially connecting the bumper and the sliders with the goal of protecting the rear (expensive!) glass.

The front was built by AllPhase here in Longmont. The main part is 2x4x.120 rectangular tubing, the sides are more 2x2 I think. It is airtight and plumbed for air fittings. the crossmember was seriously rusted, so it was replaced and a front receiver integrated.

tc, thanks. That is what I was looking for. :great: I like the look of square w/ round tube. My sliders are that way so I want to build bumpers that are along the same style. Thanks for the pics!
