Cruise Control driving me nuts!

Truck: 1994 Puckup, 4x4 V6 SR5 5spd.

I owned this rig for 2 years now and I use my cruise control a lot, which is why it sucks when it does not work!!! These symptoms have repeated theselves for 2 years, but I dont know where to even start looking.

All spring, summer and fall long (Seattle mild weather), CC had no issues whatsoever!

When the temperature drops to near freezing, the CC refuses to function. The "on" button works and the dash light comes on, but it will not 'set'.

Weird thing is, as the truck warms up, the problem slowly goes away. At first the CC sets, but will un-set if I drive over a mild bump. Then it seems to have more 'bump tolorance' and finally (after 30-45minutes) it starts to function properly.

When going skiing (colder weather) it takes longer to warm up and work right.

On a winter 2-week trip to Colorado in -30F nights and 0F days, it would never work at all. Then came to life next spring...

The temperature seems to not be cabin-related, as even in Colorado, I was able to heat up the inside of the truck pretty well, but still had no CC.

When the Cruise Control cuts out, does the light blink 5 times?

The Cruise control stores trouble codes, which you ought to look for first:

It even has a system for verifying the operation of the switch on the steering wheel, but that doesn't sound like your problem.

While there is no intentional temperature sensor in the cruise control system, there are lots of components under the hood. One might have old grease (too stiff at low temps), or the rubber seal is leaky when too cold. If you're getting a diagnostic code, that will help.

Good luck!

Holly cow!! What book is this from and where do I get one?? Horrible translation, but excellent technical info - got to be a factory manual. Could a company like Toyota really not hire someone that speaks English naitively to write their shop books?
