Cracked tranny housing
 

Well today I had the great experience of over tightening my drain plug, and cracked the housing. I got a 1994 with a 3.0, I just want clarification of the type of tranny. Is it a R150f or somthing else. And if anyone has any lucky welding cracks or stitching feel free to let me know how it went. And if you have any trannys with low km`s for sale send me a message. Thanks for any help.

I don't have any tranny's or leads but I do remember a thread on a process called Alumaloy or something similar. Basically it was a stick of aluminum and some other component that was melted into cracks or holes in aluminum and hardened with a terrific bond. The heat was only a butane torch.
The thread may have been on pirate or here, I don't remember but it may be worth looking into. The feedback was positive on the integrity of this stuff.

Why did you feel you needed to tighten the plug that much.

As the crack no doubt is into the threads any repair that does not involve the complete filling of those threads will be short term at best. I Have fixed a few of these kind of problems over the years in more expensive equipment

unless you can fix this yourself it will be cheaper to get another used transmission or at the least the case and put your gears in with a new bearing kit. Since it will be in pieces

Gona give it a go tomorrow. Drain everything completley, clean it up, grind it out a bit, pre heat it and try to get that weld real deep and then re-cut the threads. We also had an idea of welding a small plate over the crack, any thoughts on that.

Clean it properly and grind out the crack, also be sure to drill a hole at the end of the cracks on each side. TIG carefully.

Shouldn't be a high stress area or the drain would not be there. Skip the plate idea, worst part will be the threads and avoiding cracking again when SNUGGED in.

They covered fixing the crack good, but just so you know; your trans should either be an R150F [4WD] or an R150 [RWD].
F designates 4WD/AWD in Toyota transmissions.

Well we got it welded up and the leak is no longer a problem, but the tranny now shifts like garbage. It doesn`t grind or clash, its just hard/rough shifting. No roughness in the clutch pedal so I figure the throw out bearing is fine. Once the tranny warms up its a little better but still ˟˟˟˟. Any ideas? Thanks

when you put the gear oil back in??

Well to heavy a gear oil will shift better once it warms up a few minutes.

I take it the shifting was fine before the cracking of the case.

Yeah, it was good before. There was 75-90 in there originally, I pumper her full of 80-90. After about 10 minutes of driving the shifting gets smoother. So you think its just the weight and am I worrying for nothing?
