Code 71
My check engine light came on on my 94 4runner w/ a 3.0 L the other day so I went out and pulled the code on it. It says that it is a code 71. after looking this up I find that this has to do with the EGR system. where should I start to troubleshoot this and will it permannatly damage the truck if I drive it a handful of miles before I get it fixed?

hey i have a 90 4runner and i had the same code were the check engine light was on a question for are you lose of coolant , truck smoke alittle when you warm it up well any ways my ended up being blown head gaskets it cost me $360 .00 to have the heads plaind and for all new gaskets

Just got my 4runner a few weeks ago and it threw the EGR code. Went out and bought a new one and what do you know? Damn CEL is back on! :bang: Haven't gone out to check the diag to make sure it is the same one yet... but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be... If I make any progress, I will let you know, but some how I would advise against holding your breathe...

alot of times that code 71 is because your mixture is slightly rich also. the coolant temp sensor and is sometimes the culprit but i think there may be issues with the afm and possibly the iac (on the 22re) also bad grounds can cause faulty codes. my 22ee has had the same code and ive replaced everything except the throttle body , every sensor including the afm and the egr valve. i have no vacuum leaks and good grounds. i got the code to clear for about 3 weeks last spring but it came back, what helped was i added a few ground straps and cleaned all the contacts at the ground terminals. still came back. i do have a header , no cat and a bigger exhaust but it was on prior to all the exhaust mods. the code is actually related to the temp of the exhaust gas. so i would think maybe the o2 sensor would be the sensor detecting the error. that and the egr temp sensor, which i have also replaced but wth a used part. maybe thats the problem. its a real pain in the ass man... trust me i was about to just pull the cel bulb out of the cluster and say screw it.

Code 71 should only apply to vehicles first sold in Calif. before a certain year (mid 90's, I think). There seems to be a problem with the 3.0 computers (2.4 also?), where non-Cali engines think they have Cali emission controls. Look on the side of the EGR valve (front of engine, passenger's side, flex tube to exhaust) - if you see a wire going into a sensor in the side of the EGR valve, that sensor is what the computer is detecting a problem with. If you don't see this, your computer has multiple-personality issues. Pull the EFI fuse to reset the computer and don't worry until something else goes wrong, or someone more knowledgeable corrects me.

i have had a code 71 it started and then i blew a headgasket and i fixed it my self but about a week later the light came on it does not seem to be causeing a problem but now i have a 24 i think witch is rich fuel mixture and like a 46 or something i can remember its been a while since i checked i seem to be getting about the same mileage as before the headgasket about 13 1/2 and i dont seem to have any funny noises or anything like that coming from the car anyone know any more that might possibly help ?

i have a 71 code but i had it before i blew my headgasket i fixed it myself and still have it but just latly i have been getting other codes one says it too lean and i cant remember for sure but i dont think i have a wire i will check in the morn does anyone have any ideas?

Code 71 seems to be a common affliction for a number of owners but is there no real solution? Will a new EGR temp sensor fix the problem? I've found one on rockauto.com for $124 USD but I'd like a little more confidence I can fix it before spending the money. (Obviously I have the code too.)
I have a Downey header and exhaust system including a new cat but I haven't installed it yet. I also have the Downey CAI system to go with it. |
