Code 52 and terrible gas mileage.

I recently purchased a 1993 Toyota pickup 4x4 with 22re engine. It has a check engine light so I pulled the code which is 52 bad knock sensor. I read this could be causing my bad gas mileage. I searched for the location of the ks on the forums and when I went to look on my truck I noticed it was missing. I also noticed two wires that were not pluged into anything. I am assuming one goes to the KS, but I'm not sure which. From my reading I learned that most of the time its the wire its self that goes bad, is there a way to test if its bad? Would the fact that the knock sensor is not plugged in cause the code?
