Code 51 and no start

Hi everyone,

I have an 88 Toyota pickup, manual, fuel injected 22re. Has been running bad for about a month, would stutter under full load, especially when going fast uphill, and would also stutter when idling. The problem was intermittent and the exhaust smelled like gas so thought it might be a faulty egr valve, tested it with a vacuum pump and sure enough it wasn’t doing what it was supposed to. The day before I replaced the egr valve the problem got VERY worse, constant sputtering and basically zero power going up any kind of hill, I made it home and then it wouldn’t start. Already had the new EGR valve so went ahead and threw it in hoping for the best. Unfortunately with the new EGR It still won’t start and is throwing code 51. I’ve been reading this may be the TPS sensor? I pulled the throttle body to have a look there was quite a bit of carbon built up in it. Going out to test the TPS next. Any thoughts or advice on what else this could be or if I am on the right track? Thanks!

Spray some starter fluid in the throttle body. If it starts its a fuel issue, if not its an ignition issue.

Absolutely check the TPS. The FSM has an excellent check out and alignment procedure. Also, make sure all the wires going to, and in, the TPS's plug are in good shape. Old wires can break just removing the plug.

Make sure all the vacuum ports off the throttle body aren't clogged up. Just a short shot of carb cleaner into each port with the little red tube included with the cleaner can do wonders.
Make sure al the vacuum lines are in good shape. Not cracked, or loose on their end connections. Old vacuum lines can get brittle, and develop a crack just by removing them. Something to look at.

Keep us up to date on how things go for you :)
