code 13 and 43
 

13 says no signal to ecm after 1500 rpm
43 says no starter input to ecm even after 800 rpm.
where do i need to start on fixing these? thanks

i reset it and 43 came right back.

43 implies the ECU is not getting the STA (starting, aka 'cranking') signal, meaning the ECU is not aware you are trying to start the engine. Basically, the engine starts running and the ECU wasn't aware you even tried to start the engine.
You need to find the STA wire on the ECU harness and verify that it is getting voltage when you turn the key to start the truck. I don't have the pin-out for the ecu plugs so I cannot tell you which plug or which wire is the STA wire so I can't help you there. I'll see if I can find it, but no guarantees. Do you know anyone you can swap ECU's with to see if the code shows up with a different ECU? (It may be a bad ECU.)

what will code 43 hurt? i'm not tryin to get out of fixin it, i just wondered what is not workin right.

also pulled my plugs today and they look like the truck is running lean.(the tip was white). the motor only has maybe 1000 miles since rebuild. what would cause this?

the electrode tip is white, not the insulator, right?

the insulator had white on it too. the white stuff would chip off. in the pic mine was between normal and ash (lead) deposits

as long as the tip of the electrode is exposed I wouldn't think much of it other than you may have a very slight oil burning problem... maybe not even enough to show up between oil changes- could simply be blow by sucked through the PCV valve.

Is the engine running bad?

it's actually running purdy good. it's got 31's on it and got 20.7 mpg this last fill up. it does seem to use a very very little oil. thats what made me pull the plugs and pull the codes.
what will code 43 affect?

the ECU is tied into just about everything you can do to the engine from starting to cruising on the highway with the air conditioning on.
The main thing the STA signal does for the ECU is let it know you are cranking the engine in order to start it, and consequently it will richen (enrich?) the mixture during cranking and lean it out once the engine starts.
The signal means, like I said before, that the ECU isn't getting the signal you are trying to start the engine. If everything else is working when you try to start the engine: the starter cranks, the cold start injector is "injecting".... then maybe the connection to the ECU is bad / corroded. Are you getting signs of water leaking in to the ECU area?

and 20 MPG is purdy dog gone good! I get around 21-22 avg with my 88.

the ecu is behind the glove box right? if so i really haven't looked but i will.

ok i'll look tomorrow. the truck is actually purdy tight, as in not raged. i don't think there is any water getting back there but i'll check.
