Cleaned engine and killed it
I have a 1989 Toyota Pickup with a 22re. I decided to clean my engine and engine bay with the Gunk engine cleaner. Bad idea, good lesson. After the engine started it idled fine, however it now sputters on acceleration. The acceleration has a regular pattern of about 2 seconds of acceleration and about 1 second of stalling and the pattern repeats for about 20 seconds until stalling. I thought I had things protected with plastic bags, but I can't seem to find the problems. Dry distributor cap, wires, vacuum lines. Dry fuses, electrical,
- No engine check light - idles normal Dies with full acceleration of gas after 20 seconds- sputters in an even pattern until it stalls out. Smells flooded after giving it gas. Any suggestions on what to check? |

Interesting I pressure wash my engine when I think of it and have the pressure washer out .
I wonder if you didn`t knock something loose ?? I have been known to pull the coil wire out of the coil just enough to make a poor connection. I could see if your dunking your truck in a tank of water and got distracted for a few days |
Did you just cover the distributor and assume it is dry or have you actually confirmed it to be dry?

Solved: it turned out to be related to the TPS. I was getting ready to take the TPS apart and found a small hole in the housing. When I unplugged it there was water in the plug socket. Before I took the TPS apart, I dried the male and female plugs, snapped it back in and it runs great.
Thanks for everybody's help!!! |
Thanks for letting us know what it was. It might help the next guy that has a similar problem.
