check engine light?

I just got a 1990 4runner, and the "Check Engine" light is lit on the dash. I'm pretty sure that everything in the engine is fine, and I'm sick of looking down and getting grouchy thinking that something "might" be wrong, when from what I've seen, nothing is.

What can be done to turn this sucker off? I'm new to this, and I have no idea as to what to do. Can I take it somewhere and have them turn it off, or is it likely that something is actually wrong that I don't know about?

Will they be able to tell me specifically why the light is on?

Thanks!

2 things you can do:

1. Take your 4Runner to AutoZone or any other auto parts store. They will check it for free.

2. Check it yourself. Very easy to do. Look under your hood next to the main fuse box on the passenger side. Next to it, there is a little box that says "diagnostics" on the cover. Jump 2 of the ports with a paper clip. Look at your hood decal for what ports to jump. If jumped properly, you should have some instrument cluster lights flashing. Count how many times your CEL (check engine light) is flashing. For example, 5 flashes, a pause, and 2 flashes, means a code 52. Once you get your code, do a search on this forum or on the web to see what your code(s) mean.

If your light is on, then there is probably something wrong. I have never heard of a dummy light on a 4Runner. You could pull the bulb out, but I don't recomend that. :hillbill:

That's my $.02.

Thanks a lot!

I ran the test tonight, and it turned out it was code 21- o2 sensor stuff. I saw in the records that the guy I bought it from just replaced the sensor several weeks ago, so I figured that the person who did the work didn't flash the computer so I pulled the fuse for the EFI and the light went away!

Now let's hope it stays gone!

Thanks a million!
