cargo box dimensions or plans?

I know a few of you guys have built a cargo box in the back of your 4runners. I'm thinking of building one for mine but, instead of reinventing the wheel and being lazy does anybody have dimensions and the layout of their box? It would save me a lot of time and it would be nice to have something to go by.

Salue, I will have to measure mine tomorrow when it's light out and post back here.

For some ideas:
Lee's box

John Douglass's cargo box and custom rear seat storage

My cargo box

I'd show you Jackson's cargo box, but his website is dead right now.
His posts on here for his cargo box are now showing the pics either.

I have mentioned in the past here that if I could do it al over again, I would have a 1st gen roll bar in the back instead of the mini Power Tank roll bar I have now.
The PT would be up in the air on the roll bar, and I could then have a wider cargo box that goes the whole width.

The box now is not as wide due to the PT sitting on the floor.

Corey,
I appreciate you taking a measurement to yours. I was looking at Lee's and I would love a box like his, but with just one drawer with partitions w/in the drawer. Hopefully he will chime in since I posted this on 4x4wire also. I don't think I have the skills to do it w/o a layout that's been used.

Basicly all i did was measure from the back of the seat to the tailgate and from wheel well to wheel well.I bought some outdoor carpet from lowes and spary adhesive.Drawers are fairly simple also. I made mine smaller so i can remove it when needed but still hold all my small tools. I plan on making a new version of the cargo box in the near future. Here is my link.

I did a quick-n-dirty version as I work out of my truck and needed the storage. Sliding drawers are kool, but I went the easy way with hinge tops. I made one large section behind the seat, and 2 smaller ones by the hatch. About 3 hours build time. Locking arms hold the tops up. Works great for me.

Those are all nice boxes. I need to start gathering materials and the next time I go down to my G'friends house, I shall start building in the car hole. It's too cold here to work outside. I guess i'll have to start measuring too..

Hey firefighter,
I see you're into R/C cars...Is that the Clod and the Lunchbox? I used to have a Lunchbox, Fox, Mudblaster, Big Brute and an RC10. Oh yeah, and a USA-1...I've gotten rid of most of my electrics now..Now I have a T-Maxx and an HPI Nitro rs4, all gas powered.

Click the pic below to goto my page with full details and specs on how to build my Cargo Organizer. It is a different variation than the other 4Runner owners here but it suits my purposes perfectly. Holds what I need and does not increase the height of the floor which is great when folding the rear seats down.

OK Salue, I have some specs for you.
Bare with my crude text & arrows :D

The box is only 21" deep due to the sub woofer box that sits behind it that butts up against the rear seat real tight.

You could make the box much deeper if you don't have a sub back there.

Also you can the box is 37" wide.
If you don't plan on putting anything to the sides like I have as in the Power Tank, you can build the box about 45" wide.

This would allow an extra 7.5" drawer on the right side.
The reason my left drawer is 7.5" wide is so it blends in with the wheel well hump.
You can kind of see that in picture #2.

The box is nice & sturdy as the top, sides, & bottom are made out of 3/4" cherry oak.

But yeah, if I had the 1st gen type of roll bar back there like I should have done, I'd alter the size to be 45" wide thus giving me a 4th drawer.
But I can still fit quite a bit into just the 3 drawers I have now.

Hey Corey,
Did Moon make that for you? He made the sub didn't he?

Salue 02-09-2003 03:49 PM

Thanks for the measurements, it'll give me something to go by. I'm probably going to have it go a little deeper and the whole width, but at least I have something to follow.

Corey 02-09-2003 04:11 PM

Hi Dave, yep, Mr Dennis Moon made it for me :D
It was the first one he built, and it turned out pretty good.
The carpet is a little loose on it, and I may replace it later with some better stuff.

The sub box was my Xmas present to myself Xmas of '01.
Cartoy's built it for me.

Hey Jalaber - I sent you an email earlier this afternoon. Just giving you a heads up-

jalaber 02-10-2003 05:26 AM

Just got it, I am a little busy here at work today but I will most definetly respond later today. Thanks.

jalaber 02-10-2003 10:02 AM

CTB Check you mail...

I took measurements as I built, so I don't have plans for mine. If you don't get plans from anyone else, I will do some measuring for you.

Guys,

For those of you who have built cargo boxes, do you get a lot of rattles and banging? I imagine the ones w/ the shelves on the rollers are much more quieter. Sorry if that sounds so soccer mom-ish but I hate squeaks and rattles.

Bob

Corey 02-10-2003 12:31 PM

My box makes no noise at all.
The drawers just slide in with no rollers.
All three drawers are a very tight fit.

jalaber 02-10-2003 12:46 PM

No Noise either.

Ric 10-12-2005 08:30 PM

yea i know this is an old thread, thats what ya get for using the search, :banger: anyways, im thinking about building me a cargo box this winter, ive seen someone with a box that when the rear seats were flipped up, the box had an extention, so that they could sleep on it, anyone know where or who this is ? posting up new pics of cargo boxes would be awsome :rockin: as most of these links are dead. thankx for any help or pics.
