This can't be right can it? P/O Converted ADD to Manual Hubs

I think there might be some parts m.i.a. but am unsure so I want to ask here..

Vehicle is a 1994 4Runner, 4 cyl, 5 speed, 4wd.

What I need to do is find a good writeup, with pictures, of how the front driveshaft assembly goes together at the wheel when replacing the ADD solid drive flanges for a set of AISIN hubs. I believe that the p/o neglected to include a snap ring as well as (I think) a small washer that rests between there and the outermost toothed brass flange. Basically, the two lock nuts for the spindle and stake tab are there, no snap ring on the cv shaft at all, the outer chrome part of the locking hub assembly, the washered 12mm bolt that goes into the driveshaft, the hub lock assembly, all 6 10mm bolts as well as all 6 12mm bolts, with their washers and cone washers.

Problem became known due to excessive play and a noticable clunk in the cv system.

Am I correct(?) and any help would be appreciated. I've searched and cannot find a good pic intensive writeup showing the parts layout. Only other sources of info I've found only show the hub disassembly or the basics.

Help please? If you need to understand better, I am referring to this link, http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...i/frontdri.pdf

in that, page SA-39, step 3 where it says "Spacer" and "Snap Ring".

If there isn't a writeup can someone please just post a picture of their parts/assembly so I can figure this out before Monday.

I think depending on the model you either have a snap ring OR the 12mm bolt w/ washer on the end of the axle shaft.

I kind of agree with wabbit- it's one or the other. The bolt and washer amounts to a thrust washer that keeps the cv stub from pulling out of the hub and amounts to the same as the snap ring... just with more play.
But wabbit should have all the 411 you need to help complete any parts you're missing.

Wabbit, I agree for most of the earlier years but I believe the later year models were specced with both, at least on all the non-add spec'd trucks and 4Runners. Now that I see two others are saying they had it the way I thought it went I can go ahead and order up the spacer and snap ring, and of course by that point I might as well have a second look at the brass washer tolerances to be sure the inner's not worn too far.

Thanks for the replies.

I have both on my '91. I just did this conversion here a few months ago, along with new CV axle shafts. 2nd gens do indeed have both.

^Can one of those people above replying with "I have both on mine" please go ahead and if willing, pull your hub lock and chrome housing and go ahead and do a story-picture set then post them in here of the assembly and reassembly, I would take some but I'm stuck waiting on axles now.

This way it can be used by not just me but also by others later on. I like pictures better than manuals anyhow.

Thanks in advance!

*I believe it goes,

Pull all 6 10mm bolts, then the top plate and lock.

Pull the 12mm bolt w/ the large brass washer.

Pull the 12mm nust, washers and cones.

Pull the chrome housing off.

Pull the C-spring-clip.

Pull the washer.

Remove the 6 17mm nuts from the inner output shaft-cv assembly.

Pop the inner part of the shaft free, sometimes you have to turn your wheel inwards to free it up a little more.

Jack up your lower arm.

Remove the lower ball joint nuts.

Slightly release the jack pressure and disconnect the lower balljoint.

Pull the spindle out slightly and remove the rest of the driveshaft.

Assemble in reverse order.

????Correct, again pics will help a lot!
