I bought an '86 4runner with a 22re a few months back, which the owner before last had put an aftermarket intake and exhaust on, as well as gauges and all sorts of other goodies. After adjusting the valves for the first time after the head gasket job I just had to do to, I realized that the stock valve lash is waaaaay too loose. I suspect it has an aftermarket cam in it though the guy I bought it off didn't mention it. He bought it for his kid from the original owner- who had all that stuff installed and also had the engine and tranny rebuilt 40K miles ago according to receipts- but she didn't like it, so it sat until I bought it. Anyways, I took the valve lash down a hair and its better, but still a tad noisy. Is there any way to ID the cam to know what I am working with? I looked for a marking of some kind but didn't see anything.

mine has no markings and its a 268 torker cam very good for me

a stock cam will have the TEQ logo on it. there is only one kind of stock cam. if it doesnt have that, its a aftermarket cam. which means you will have to either spec it out ( measure the lobes with a micrometer ) or keep making small adjustments till the noise is gone.

but make sure theres not another problem, too. check the rockers for lateral play, and check the torque in the headbolts

Well, after a couple of adjustments I have it where it sounds like it did before I tore it down, and power is good. Now they're set at .007" and .009" which is what I saw as the recommended lash on a couple of aftermarket cams, so I am going to leave it.
