broke spark plug in head, broke easy out, ideas?

okay guys, picked up an 88 4runner today, 22re, 5 speed , has some body rot but for 440$ bucks I couldn't pass it , heck has brand new tires, but the thing is, he says he was doing a tune up on it, and broke the number 4 spark plug in the head, he attempted to easy out it out and broke the easy out, don't wanna pull the head, debating on welding a nut on the easy out and trying to back it out, but has anyone else had an experience with this? any ideas? if I have to pull the head I will, but any ideas will be accepted ill post pics of it in a little while if I feel like it, im back on yotatech like I said I was!

Being it is #4 I can say try what you want you might get lucky.

How much of the easy out can be seen most often they break so low nothing to grip.

You might also want to try cold and heat to loosen things up .

We get the spray that freezes in cans and then the torch.

In the end it might just be easier to pull the head and be done.

Most likely time for timing chain any way.

+1, heat and cool or just pull it.

I know there's a special tool for extracting broken plugs for Triton engines. Might want to take a look at a Ford forum to see if there's any info that might work for you. Seems to be a pretty common issue with the Triton engines. Might give you some ideas...

I've welded a nut to extract that way, so it can be done.

the ford tool wont work, its set up to fit those heads only. and when the plugs break on fords, the nut portion comes out, its the tip that gets left behind. i vote for welding a nut and see what happens, worst case scenario the head has to come off.

Isn't the head aluminum? You're going to have to be one helluva welder to drop a good bead down the middle of a 10mm nut without melting the aluminum.

My welding skills aren't quite up to that; if it were me I'd remove the head to give me some chance to get at it.

Oh, and I doubt you're going to be able to do anything to an easy-out (hardened tool steel) with a Dremel-like tool.

if the plug broke off to begin with I betcha that darn thing is seized in there real good. You can try x, y and z to get it out, but if its stuck enough to break off to begin with, you might as well just pull the head


you can spend night after night trying different methods, but if you just sit down and go for it you can have that head off in a matter of a few hours

started cleaning it up today, power washed the motor, going to try welding a nut and backin it out first, if it gets sketchy ill just pull the head, I mean gosh ive done it 20+ times anyways, ill throw some pics up tomorrow for sure , I bought to buy fix and sell for cash, but im kinda liking it more and more.....
