Sounds life a filiment in the bulb busted off and is resting on the taillight filament in the bulb causing the brakelights to illuminate at all times maybe.

It's worth a check.

i don't understand what you are saying. the dash brake light is what styas on like it does when i have the e brake on but the e brake is off and the dash brake light is still staying on. i tried pulling the e brake on and then taking it off and the dash brake light still stays on.

Whoops, I though you met your actual brake lights. My mistake.

Check the push switch around the e-brake handle, it can be fussy.

Mine use to do the same thing...sensor in brake fluid cap goes out and it will come on and off...sometimes stay on for a while. Everything checked good on mine, fluid, e-brakes...all but that sensor.

This was the case on my '92. The sensors get a pinhole in the float after many miles and fluid fills them. When they start to sink, they send a signal as if the fluid is low. You can disconnect the wire leads to the reservoir cap as a way to check.

Brake fluid low. Add fluid.
Brake fluid reservoir sensor worn out. Do as above to check...replace it.
E-brake under the dash switch needs adjusting and/or your e-brake handle.

Please update when you get it fixed so others can find this thread helpful.

99 runner doing the same thing but after a wheeling trip where lots of thick goopy mud was EVERYWHERE. i used the ebrake from time to time on and off hills while spotting a line. it bugs me now and is mostly when the truck is first started up. when driving if i let off the gas, it dissapears and rarely comes back on.
stumped on this and will try the above tomorrow. how do i check the sensor and where exactly is it located?
also i have cleaned and cleaned the cable and will recheck the line for debris.

ok, i checked my brake fluid and it is right at or maybe a hair below the minimum line on the reserivor so i think this is why the brake light came on. unfortunatly, i have no brake fluid here that i can add to it. nor do i have any money to get any brake fluid to add to it. there is some at the house though which is 30 miles away via interstate and city driving. so i will just have to wait till i go home and get that bottle and bring it back here and top it off.
