There is a allen bolt just under my oil pressure sender and just in front of my oil filter. This pic shows it, and is taken from the DS under the frame.


I am trying to find a reasonable sized oil leak and this seems to be the general area for the source. Understanding the effects of wind and such while driving, oil could just be gathering there I suppose.

What I am trying to find out is what is the purpose of this bolt, and if it is leaking what would be the best way to fix? Some type of thread sealant perhaps?

Since the bolt has no head, I am not sure if it just needs to be tightened and if it was what the bolt would be tightening into or against.

Well, why don'tcha put an allen head wrench in there and give it a snug?

Because I don't know what's behind it, or it's purpose.

Some bolts aren't meant to be bottomed out... although I admit the leak may just be a case of a loose bolt.

Looking for info on the purpose of this bolt before I just start messing with it.

I usually throw on some degreaser and spend some time cleaning and then take her for a spin. It will give you a better look at the source. A few spins around the block should do ( and help avoid high winds blowing it all around).

It isn't a bolt it's a pipe plug, threaded into the oil galley of the block.

Ah... pipe plug. So, just crank it down I suppose?

Maybe just snug it up a bit. If it is the cause of the leak, you might want to remove it, and use a good sealant on the threads, then reinstall it.

I'll take a look at tightening/ sealing the plug.

It looks like it's an alternate oil pressure tap point, judging from the location.
