Bluest DIY paint job ever!(after some much needed rust control)
**update scroll all the way to the bottom for the new color**
As I started to mix the paint I realized I ordered Medium Blue instead of "ocean blue" so I decided to try anyway. Not thrilled about the color and I ran out of paint as soon as I was making some of the final passes after I had finally found the sweet spot of the paint gun adjustments... I think I may wait till it dries and then get a couple more quarts in a few weeks maybe a darker blue like I was going for and try to get a better gloss finish since I botched it thistime around. It applied really well but was spattering because I didnt have the gun settings dialed in... let me know what everyone thinks... Thanks to this site and members for the amazing wealth of knowledge offered to us all. I've been around for a while but haven't really posted a whole lot.(search works pretty well) Originally... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/6890544440/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/6890544440/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr Rusty wells... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7036636773/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7036636773/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr Cut it out... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268735504/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268735504/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268738294/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268738294/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr This one was a doozy.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268746808/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268746808/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268725338/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268725338/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr Por 15 then... my attempt at fiberglassing... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268731916/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268731916/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268707558/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7268707558/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr Then I couldnt work on it for a while so i rattle canned it a little and tried not to think about it.... that lasted about 4 months. Then I decided to fix up the dents as much as I could and paint it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728841094/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728841094/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr Forgot to take the pic of the final primer so here it is right before paint(I should have taken more time on the stripe area... ) Unfortunatley I was on a time crunch... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728839176/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728839176/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr And the drumroll please.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838964/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838964/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838772/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838772/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838576/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838576/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838324/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728838324/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728837506/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728837506/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickrhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728837506/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728837506/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728837118/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728837118/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836840/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836840/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836574/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836574/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836154/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836154/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836344/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728836344/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728835908/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728835908/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728835276/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728835276/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728835728/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7728835728/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr :D Over all not thrilled about the finish(my fault) and the Color was a bit light. I think I'll be going a little darker in a few weeks... And next time around ill get it all glassy like the windshield cowling... Next weekend I'll be doing the top with black. |
Looks great for a DIY paint job!

Good job with all that rust. That looks like a Brightside medium blue. You better be where you're supposed to be in that truck because it's unique. I've heard that humidity makes paint less glossy, maybe that's the problem you had. (You said you wanted more gloss; it looks great from here!)
|
Looks lots better without holes. There's a 3rd gen around here somewhere in that color. I like it, but then I'm kinda feeling mine isn't blue enough any more.
Edit: Ah, it's JBurt's https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f200...thread-244557/ |
not bad.. single stage or base/clear?
looks a bit orange peely, maybe next time try turning up the feed (more paint leaving gun) or slow down your passes. it may have also been too warm when you sprayed but for now just wetsand and polish it will look great |

Ok that's it. Screw this I am not paying 4k for a paint job. You sir have convinced me that I will do this myself. Thank god I have zero rust to deal with, but there are 20 years worth of small dents and dings. You did a hell of a job man!!!!!!
|
Awesome man. Talk about a 180
|
I'd take a bit of orange peel over those rust holes any day. A 1000% improvement. :)
I had that color on a re-painted '76 Pinto with a well reinforced bumper back in the day...it was a hand-me-down car that got me through college. |
looks sweet , how did you apply it?
|
I had a geo metro that was the same color gm called it"quasar blue" kinda cool name for it most called it smurf blue. But looks way cooler on that than a metro:)

Wow that new color looks really good! You are no longer "the bluest" but your truck will always have an inner Smurf. What did you use as a thinner for spraying it? How smelly is the stuff? I have an attached garage and I wouldn't want to stink up the house. I also have a gas furnace and water heater in the garage. It looks like you have gas too. Did you extinguish the pilot light? How large of an air compressor do you have?
I did a great job of rolling and tipping my Boston Whaler a couple of years ago. I used Awlgrip which can be deadly paint. You can't tell it isn't sprayed but I'm not intending to roll paint my 4Runner. I am not sure but I think I read you can't cut and buff Awlgrip but you can cut and buff Brightside to get rid of orange peel. For anyone thinking of using boat paint, this place sells Brightside, Easypoxy and Epiphane one stage (topside) paints that are comparable to Porcelain's paint. They all offer different colors. If you noodle around the internet a little you can find a coupon for free shipping: http://www.jamestowndistributors.com...e+Polyurethane |

I used thinner Interlux # 216 about 1/10, thinner/paint. The compressor I used is a craftsman 33gal 5 hp, got an hvlp gunw/regulator and oilwater filter from TCP global sprayed at about 40-45 psi. Used 2 quarts or brightside from boatersland.com ( it was a little closer and cheaper than jamestown but they look good too). I did some research on cutting and buffing the brightside and found out that the manufacturers don't really recommend wetsanding(between coats is fine) and suggest against buffing. They say it's mostly because it already has the "clear" in the paint since its a one part poly, and this could make it loose some durability... I'm thinking this is with the assumtion your using it on a boat... I've also read of people getting good results cutting and buffing. I'll wait and let it settle and till after this hurricane and then probably buff it out. It didn't really smell TO bad but should be ventilated for sure. I was in an attached garage but painted with the door open. I do have gas but Here in south FL no furnace... just the AC unit. If you have a gas water heater of furnace it would be a good idea to shut it off. I'd love to see a pic of the whaler when you get a chance too..... Here are the top on pics.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860893136/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860893136/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860879084/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860879084/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860870690/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860870690/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860866868/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860866868/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860864068/http://www.flickr.com/photos/78665484@N08/7860864068/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/78665484@N08/, on Flickr |
