Which is better? ISR mod or K&N Cold air intake?
 

The K&N intakes go for around $250 new for my 2nd gen.

I can probably get the parts for the ISR mod for around $30-$40 like everyone else.

I was just wondering which one gives more hp and torque?

How much does the ISR mod give?

ISR isnt much, just throttal responce and the engine revs faster. Ive also noticed that the engine has less trouble getting to the power band. The main difference is the air before the filter. K&N as a high flow filter and special housing and what not.

I did the ISR a few months ago and even my friends say "i notice more power with this".

save yourself $200 bucks and do the ISR mod along with the DECKPLATE. I did this in my runner and it's a lot more responsive like Tubbyfatty said. You might run into legal issue w/ the ISR and DECKPLATE though in Cali as i thought you guys had vehicle inspections, and know for a fact you have way tougher smog laws.

it shouldnt affect smog, and IIRC my local smog guy said that hed pass me in inspections as long as the hoses were hooked up right where they are supposed to be in the intake...

and technically, us second gen guys dont have a "deckplate"... just take a 1/4 inch drill bit to the bottom of your air box... make it look all fancy and stuff... ill try to snap a pic of mine, but if i do, ill have to clean my KnN filter and i cringe at the thought of doing that... so i might not... lol...

Yeah I don't really want to spend $250 on a K&N intake.

Anyway, today I realized that mud and water would probably get on the filter which isn't good.

I was checking out the S&B intakes and they look like something I'd be interested in.
It's only 190$ and if I do the ISR mod it would be like $30-40 and a K&N filter is like $40.

So I'm between $70-80 with that mod...

How are the S&B intakes? any good?

I hear those S&Bs are nice. Look at the instructions tho, its a little complicated.

If someone gave me one of those id take it, i wouldnt buy one tho. For 200 i could get a few things for my rig.

Just do the ISR then if you still wanna spend more money just for looks go for it, haha.

you can only get so much power out of these 3.0s.

I think I may get an S&B.. but I'm not sure yet.. Anyone else have any other thoughts?

Hmm. I just thought of something.

The S&B intake has a small plastic pipe that is used to connect to the stock tube that goes to the throttle body.

With their design it has a curve in the air flow due to the fact the hose is in 2 pieces rather than one! The ISR is 1 pipe which would create a better air flow..
An ISR with the S&B air box would be a cool set up I think.

Actually now that I looked at it more the S&B looks like the box has the hole too low for the ISR to work without having to bend it in 2 locations.. so S&B is efficient I guess.. lol.

I have the idea to do the ISR and stick one of those round air filters on where the S&B box would be. I don't know how it would be mounted though. oh hell it'd be easier to save for the S&B.. and now that I've seen it I think I like it over the K&N because of the box being able to keep out water.

Technically, no generation has a deckplate, just a big hole in the air box with a nice dressed up sailing part that has a removeable cap.:grouphug:

But i'm sure you already know this. OP> what about getting a Airaid JR. intake tube. Not sure if this will work on 2nd gens but it could be worth a look.

K&N system is junk. $300 bucks and all you get is a crappy tube and a crappy filter which now loses the factory ram-air airbox.

Do the ISR mod. 3" exhaust pipe, paint it to match = under $10
Throw in a new stock filter and be done with it.

IF you want significant intake gains, worry about your tiny Vafm measuring pass... Swap in the camery Vafm...

whats the camry vafm? Ive been wondering...

ITs the Vafm from a camery (1991 I think). It has a bigger (3.0"o.d) intake bore and the actual air flapper doorway is bigger (can't think of a better term..).

Requires modification of your airbox (or you can run a open cone style aircleaner setup). And modification of your stock intake (or do the isr mod...)

I read about the camry vafm mod and It doesn't seem like something I want to do. I don't want to have to tinker around with it..

$48 for a used camry air box. $30-40 for ISR. $40 K&N air filter. = $118-128!

I rather do the S&B. I'm not worried about spending the $190 because it is engineered for our 4Runners and comes with a warranty and carb number for smog.

I think the ISR was a smart idea but the camry air box thing is a bit different. lol. It was made for a different car so it is going to need that tinkering around with that I rather not do.

I think I may go with the S&B or do the ISR with a K&N filter..

But, just to clarify. The Camry afm does something no other intake on the market does. Increases the amount of air that can actually be sucked into the intake..

But I would go ISR and (I suppose) a drop in K&N filter.

is it true that the ISR mod decreases mpg, while the K&N increases mpg? because i know that could be a big deciding factor for some people.

why not both!! just make an ISR and modifi it to get cold air from fender !!
