Angry Anything wore than a NEW leaky rear main?


Used a good VITON seal and the crank surface wasn't bad. I probably should have installed a speedi sleeve but DAMIT!

Any hope that it will wear in, seat and seal itself?


Yeah. I know. Probably not.

It may or may not, time will tell. I had a groove worn in one of mine and the seal I had was not going to seal it. What I did have was another brand of a seal that was just wider or narrower to clear the groove and seal it. Not the best fix, but it worked for me.

How deep was that groove, Terry? I thought about letting the seal stick out just a little, not fully seating it into the housing, but the groove depth was less than 0.005". I think it should have sealed. I also placed a bit of grease between the inner and outer seal lips. I'm kicking myself now for not spending the extra 60$ for a speedi sleeve.

A new leaky rear main AND front oil pump seal could be worse!

Off the bat I'll tell you I didn't use a sleeve. Although the groove you're mentioning you have I seem to recall I had the same minor imperfection from around 170k-180k miles of use. I was using a new OEM seal and it sat in a different area, I can't remember but I think it was thinner because I remember seeing the previous mark/line. I also recall people on this board discussing that toyota made two versions (thick/thin) just for that reason, not sure though.

You can check to make sure as others on this board have said, try coloring the marked area with a permanent marker then put your seal (already in the housing) on and turn it left to right. Hopefully it will show where the seal lip sits by rubbing away the marking.

Also, when I was thinking of putting a sleeve on I was going to use a micro sleeve, don't know if one is better than the other or not. But sure seems significantly cheaper at $8.95 http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/product899.html

I also remember putting a good amount of grease on the seal lip area to help make sure I didn't start another groove.

You guys are right, I should quit whining. It's just a kick in the balls to have a new engine leak oil. Bigger KIB to pull the engine back out to fix it. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks for the ideas Grego92. Like your avitar. One of the reasons I chose to rebuild and do the 5-speed swap is so I could keep up with traffic during the 5 hour drive to the south core banks. This pic makes me feel better...

I thought it might be some redneck engineering the way I got around my groove, glad to see I am not the only one that does it that way. I would guess my groove was about .005 deep. Grego knows his stuff on these motors and where to get the parts at.

Grego.. Do you have a list of sites? I have done numerous searches and never deen parts dinosaur. You have posted other sites as well that I have never seen in the past.

Nice fishing rig setup JodyR! looks like you have some kind of swing-out table coming out of the tail gate? mines setup for kayak fishing and camping.


Hey Terry! no, i don't have a list of sites. I just kind of remember sites and have them in my head. I'll have to write them down one day and post them up.

Thanks Greg. I fabbed up a 7 gauge steel rear bumper with an aluminum swingout. Fitted a propane grill with some flip-up tables. Works great at the beach. If your Drum or Flounder spot is hot and you don't want to leave, just fire up the grill right there and fish-on!

I'm reading through your and Terry's build threads' now. Looking Good! Lots of great info.
