anyone running 33's and 4.10's? (22R-E) MPG? driveability?

I'm going to be picking up some new tires in the next couple of months and I would like to hear some input from those that currently or have in the past run 33" tires and 4.10 gears. I've searched around but couldnt find much about this particular configuration.

I already know that 4.88's will be closest to stock ratio with 33's. I would like to purchase tires first and then re-gear and lock when money presents itself. Would a 33" be unbearable as a daily driver? What would i be looking at in terms of MPG and driveability?

I would Ideally like to run a 33x12.5 on a 15x8 w/3.75" backspacing. I really like the stance of a wider 33. I know a lot of people are running 33x10.5 which is great because it requires no lift in most cases but do they really make any difference in MPG?

Thanks in advance guys

33x12.50 will be heavier and have more rolling resistance. It will be worse on gas mileage. My 22RE with 31s averages 18 mpg. and it's SLOW! The power from the motor is fine, but i can tell that I need more gearing. 5th gear on the highway is only for flat sections of road, and I have to be going at least 77 to have the RPMs to keep some power in 5th. I do not reccomend 33s and 4.10s.

I have 33x12.5's on my 4Runner with 4.10 gears and it is slow. I bought it like that and haven't had the money to change the gears yet. Slow but I get around just fine just don't jump out in front of anyone. 65/70 mph in 5th gear on the hwy is about as fast as I get and like mentioned above it has to be a pretty flat Rd/Hwy.

I had to do it for two long road trip weekends ( my 4.88 grenaded). It was different. I drove about 2500 miles on the gears. Every now and then it seemed better, but most of the time I was cruising in 3rd and 4th. I had to cruise at 4700 in 3rd one day to break 50mph; for about 200 miles.

I dont recall mileage, I was just happy to get my 4.88's back.

33x12.5 R15 on 10Inch Rims. 22RE AUTO, No problems here guys,

Yes its a little slow, and Yes its not the greatest on gas. ECT and OD are your Friend.

When I wanna pass I click the little OD Button the Engine drops into the next lowest gear and the RPMS Spike way up and as long as Im going downhill with the wind behind me I can usally pass. I wont bother re-gearing until its SAS'd and I put 35's on it.

Wow, from what I've read 22r-e, 4.10's AND an auto, especially in a 4runner would be completely unbearable. I would be curious to know what kind of MPG is typical and how much premature wear would be put on the clutch. (i realize 4Hummer's running an auto)

I highly doubt you're familiar, but I drove back to cookeville from nashville this weekend, and I was in quite a hurry to get back for fraternity meeting, so I was going as fast as possible. I got to the bottom of the plateau and it proabably goes from 400 to 1100 feet in 3 miles. I was in 4th at 4000 RPMs and doing 65-70. I wanted to go faster, because I was being passed, so I downshifted to 3rd gear, put the RPMs up to about 5000. Even with that, on something as slight a grade as I was on, I was unable to get above 70 mph....

Its fine to have 4.10s and whatever size tires around town, I can zip around pretty well... I'm not in a hurry, and not trying to race people off the line, but point in case.... not having enough gearing will really show up on the highway.

I am running 33.12.5's w a 3"BL on my 86' 22re 5spd. mileage is 14 in town 16 on the highway. I keep excellent records. 4.10 gears. I can do almost 90 if it's not windy. Not unbearable by anymeans looks good and is still practical for DD. If mileage is a concern just keep everything tuned up like the basics. plenty of power to pass if you drop down to 4th. speedo is off by 8mph at 70 im doing 78 checked w/ GPS.

How is this possible? My engine is running in perfect condition, and even stronger than usual now that I have a muffler. I can't believe that you have enough power when i have smaller tires and know for a a fact that I don't have enough power to suffice on the highway.

Umm let me do the math thats 68.35 MPH

I can cruise at 70 all day too, but that really doesn't help when it comes to highway passing. everyone on the road is going at least 75, so you need to be able to go 80+ to pass and if I'm going up even the slightest hill at all on the highway maintaining those speeds is IMPOSSIBLE in 4th or even 3rd gear.

While it may be driveable, I don't think its even remotley feasable to have a 4cyl gas vehicle that gets 12 mpg at any time. If thats considered good driveablity, then I'd LOVE to see a 22RE thats bad in the driveablity dept.

I play the passing game, you know you pass them on downhill they pass you on uphill, really pisses the truckers off...and thats with 4.88's.... Face it, 117 is enough HP for passing on stock tires....

BFG has a 33" 10.50 15 that you can put on your regular stock rims, I'd go for that, or another 33" 10.50 15; I think Dunlop also has one. Going with the factory 10.5 width won't hurt gas that much. The only thing you MIGHT have to do is lift the torsion bar a half inch, you can go a full inch if you have locking hubs. However, I'm 90% sure you won't even have to do that.

I would argue that a "tired" engine and improper gearing will both contribute to a rig being "slow".

My freshly built 22RE w/ 4.88 gears and 37/12.50/15s will get up and get off the line and go as fast as you dare...and it gets 20 mpg to boot on the highway.

So don't just look at tires...consider how "fresh" your engine is as well.

agreed, a weekly mentos will help keep your engine "fresh"
