My rear bumper looks bad & i'm thinking that I might just pull it off & not have one till I get a tube bumper. I have a 2in lift & have thought about getting one of those tube steps that fits in the hitch as a mini bumper that i can remove off road
Anyone done this & regretted it?

Mine got mangled so I took it off. My trailer hitch is my bumper right now but I think I'll add a tube bumper.
First time I got hit there the lady goes "I so sorrry, I no loooooking!" That one didn'e cause a dent but ruined her 1980's Volvo front end. I just smiled as I was getting back in the truck.
Next time some moron in a parking lot hit me when I was in the store and that's the one that mangled it. Moron just took off so I took off the bumper.
Truck seems to be cursed but I love it. After those hit definitely going to add a bumper that bites back.

The bumpers on the first gens are just cosmetic. Even worse, the rear one is bolted to the body rather than the frame. I'm welding up a set of tube bumpers for mine.

no bumper
No rear on my '88. I don't regret it. Take yours off, it looks better (until you get a tube bumper) that way. Make sure you remove the mounts behind it, too to complete the look or else it will look like it just fell off. Good luck!

Ive had my 95 limited runner for about eight months now, and to make this story short, two days after I bought it I took off the running boards, lower front bumper, trailer hitch, spare tire and mount, and the rear bumper, after taking all of this of I really dont have to worry about scaping on any of these edges, and Ive been told that from behind it looks pretty cool, so I left it off and am in the process of tube bumpers..

i took mine off about a year and a half after paintining my chrome bumpers black. the paint was startin to chip in places and i had banged them up some in Moab. i was gonna leave my hitch on but i thought it didn't look very good with the gap between the hitch and body, so i took it off too. waiting for a big country custom tube bumper

Here's why my bumper has been off for a month ...
I'm beginning to see what Steve was talking about with all the hours involved to make a bumper. I figure between my welder buddy and I, there's at least 30 manhours in it already and it's not even on the truck yet!

That looks like it will weigh a TON. And yes, fabricating just about anything takes consider time...if not in actual welding time, but in research, planning and development so the fubars are kept to a minimum...and especially if you plan to duplicate teh item...and not the fubars.
Looks beefy...but I still prefer tubeage.

Thanks Brian. Yes, round would have been easier and lighter, but this will match the 4Crawler sliders better. Actually, it looks EXACTLY like the sliders.
As for the beefiness, I work as an engineer in a steel mill, so I guess the "no such thing as overkill when you're talking about 200 tons of molten steel" kinda creeps into my other designs
