another turbo truck build??? help with what parts to get..
 

i just got a pretty clean 87 ex-cab TURBO truck... sat for 7 years and the motor knocks.. tore it down and want it to go back together NICE.. what do you guys think of these??

the motor is at the machine shop so i need to figure this rod and piston thing out quick!

pistons and rings are great,eagle rod are proven up to 600hp and includes bearings free shipping,not a bargain but right on the price,go get it

Will it make the machine shop mad if you don`t buy the parts from them.

Who installs these new parts ?? Are you a sharp enough inspector to make sure the product is as stated??

these turbo pistons alone with npr rings are $150 and are excelent japanese part.the rods $300,bearings around $20,total $470 plus shipping all from one place,not so expensive

waiting on the machine shop to buy the stuff but I'm pretty sure we are gonna go 20 over. I'm gonna have the block decked and head surfaced and at hick head gasket to make up for whatevers taken off. Then ill get some arp studs.

I have them, but what am I really getting from them? Head bolts work just fine and no one can see or hear that I have ARP studs, but the money I spent on them could have paid for half a set of Corbeau seats.

Ted @ enginebldr told me not to, and I didn't listen.

Save your money unless you race your truck and need to frequently rebuild the engine. That's the only scenario where studs are money well spent.

I respectivly dissagree .. ARP studs are the bomb .. do it .
you'll know what I mean when you have a couple of head bolts break

I've built turbo motors before and ill ALWAYS use arp.

I'm not worried about people seeing them or hearing them. It's when I have a boost spike or throw my supra turbo at it with 15 pounds of boost I know I have studs that aren't gonna stretch and blow my 100 dollar head gasket.

So its gonna be my dd. Should I go all out on the motor, eagle rods, pistons ct-26 supra turbo. Ect? Or just get new pistons, have stock rods refurbished arps and cometic gasket with stock turbo..then do a solid axle swap with a small lift and 33s? ( I have everything but spring hanger and frame tubes)

I found an 86 Turbo Runner, running...... 2K$ .... Very clean, .....but it's an Auto, not to stoked on that, so might pass.

None of the turbo runners came 5spd

False - I have one in my yard.

Also I read that the stock compression on a turbo motor is 7.5 to 1 and that kit gives 8.5 to 1. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Maybe with the ct20 it would be good to increase compression, but I think the ct26 would like the lower compression better. Also I don't think there's any need to replace the rods. They don't usually wear out. That is a kit to convert a non turbo motor into turbo. I think you should just get new pistons and bearings. Get the ARP studs just in case.

Yours might have been manual swapped. Does it have an r151 trans ?

Check the id plate under the hood! I have often read that all turbo 4Runners came with the 4 pinion turbo or V6 rear-end, but according to the id plate on my 86 Turbo runner the rear diff in mine is a 2 pinion. I haven't pulled it yet to know for sure, but that is what my Vehicle ID plate under the hood says!
As far as pistons go, I went with factory Toyota, for my rebuild! They were only $60.00 apiece at Champion ToyotaWorld in Houston. OEM, there is no guess work, I know what I have!

iv never seen a turbo truck (besides 2wd) not have the turbo/v6 diff.

I think you're nuts for wanting to dump alot of money into one of these motors. I would either keep it near stock or motor swap that unit. These motors can't handle boost very good without tons and tons of money, and then they're still a ticking time bomb. Mine is a RE block and head with a T-3 pushing max boost without detonation and that's around 8lbs. I think it runs awesome and can pull about any hill in 5th on the interstate no prob. I plan on intercooling it and then possibly meth injection, just to get my boost a little higher, and then I'm done. All the people on the turbo forum admit that it has been a major time and money eater making this motor fast. Just my opinion, if you want something fast, dump a 1 or 2jz in that thing. I know, I'm a hypocrite and will probably stick with this motor now that I have it, but if I could start all over again, I would totally do something different.
