Another Tire size question........
I have a set of 15x9 rims with 4.5" backspacing. What is the largest tire I can fit without having to do MAJOR mods. I'm looking at putting in a deaver AAL in the rear and cranking the torsion bars up a little in the front for about 1-2" of lift. I have no problems with trimming the inner fender wells if needed.
Can I fit a 33 x 12.5 or 31 x 12.5? thanks in advance, jeff :rockin: |

Backspacing is stock, so most you can fit is 31's.
|
I thought guys were fitting 33's with stock backspacing??
-jeff |
I don't think so .. i ran 32s for awhile with it rubbin' against the front inner fenders on partial-full turns. now i got 31s and i hate them. I tore them off and put my stock bald tires back on. (spereate rims) Can anyone say 18-20 in the city :) thank the lord. Don't get me wrong big tires are BA on toys, but if u've got a 22re, no amount of modification will get you better than stock tire mileage with anything close to 31s
|
you can fit 33x10.50 on stock rims. check out TC's profile, he seems to be the guru on fitting these
|
yeah with a 12.5" wide you wont be able to run with stock backspacing.
look into getting some cheap chev rally style rims that are wider from your tire shop or a junk yard, it will be pretty cheap. -cory |
How about a 32x11.5? Like a BFG AT or kumho KL Mud?
|
You can definitely do 33's on there surf. It's the width that kills you. Why do you think I sold my 33x13.50's? :D Do a 33x10 or a 33x9 and you'll be happy. Seriously.
|
33x10.50 or 33x9.50 will fit on stock rims with no lift.

33X10.5s fit on stock wheels ;-)
|
 Yeah, guys...but, he did mention "lift". Would that not changes things? Backspacers would help make up the difference, also.....would they not? They're not that expensive, and wouldn't need much, eh? Unless, they're just crap or something? :dunno: (Although, regearing would need to happen)
|
Unless he shims his lower bumpstops, the lift will make no difference offroad. Onroad, yes, but his truck will still flex up the same as it did before. The wide tires will rub.
|
axle ike, might you have re-geared, or maybe your one of those that drive at a grandpa moses pace. I honestly would like to know how your running tires like that w/out sacrificing fuel economy. Your math may be off, cuz i honestly DOUBT you are getting 21-24 in the city w/33s. On second thought, maybe you can ... all i know is im running 31x11.5 and w/ a brand new rebuild, performance exhaust intake and correct timing ... im getting 16-17 with those tires. To every truck it's own, i guess mine just likes small tires and lots of fuel.
|
You can run with torsions cranked, ride will be STIFF and you have 0 flex. I knew a guy who wheeled with 33x12.5s on a front torsion bar lift, it didnt last he broke the suspension bit by bit and then flipped his truck anyways.
|
^^bad idea...just run the 10.5s on stock wheels and you'll be straight

My odometer is off by .03, or 3%. I correct every time i fill up. That has been checked via GPS, over hundreds of miles, since the tires aren't exactly 33". average was .03. Uncorrected i get like almost 30. I have a brand new, bored out motor. I do drive like a grandma most of the time, which is to say that I drive the speed limit. I'm also not a moron, so I don't blast out of traffic lights or try and "race" people. |
AxleIke, that is awesome you get such great mileage on your tires. Now I'm definitely going for the regear.
|
Well, there's just all kinds of problems with this.
First - by "biggest" do you mean tallest, widest, what? If you mean tallest, the biggest is a 33x9.50 or 33x10.50. If you mean widest, you can go 15.50 wide, but it better be <29" tall Second - he said the rims are 15x9 with 4.5" backspacing - that is not stock. I don't know how to account for different rim widths and what backspacing would be equivalent. I know that your best bet for fitting the tallest possible tire with no lift is 15x7 with stock BS (which I think is 4.5", but not sure) Third - since he has 9" wide rims, 10.50's are out of the equation (IMHO anyways) You will suffer ALL KINDS of rim damage with only 1.5" difference in the two. Don't ask how I know this. Yes, AxleIke has regeared AND drives like grandpa Moses :D |
Good points tc. AxleIke, do you have any pics of your 8" wheels on your 9.5" tires? That would be the same as doing the 9" wheel on the 10.5" tire. I had a set of 10" wheels on 10.5" tires and the rim was pretty exposed. Looked nice though. :D
|
I used to run 34x9.50 TSL's on 8" rims. Here's what they looked like, and why I got rid of them:

Lol.. damn tc! What the heck did you do to those things???
|
Does anyone else make a 33 10.50 other than BF Goodrich? Me searching tells me no.
|
those are bias ply TSL's. About as much sidewall flex as a brick. I rolled a tire off the rim the first time I had mine out, becasue i went down to 12psi. Now I stay at 17, and do fine.
Here is my truck with the 9.50's http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/IMG_1784.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/IMG_2065.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/IMG_2070.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/IMG_1742.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/IMG_1711.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...e/IMG_1474.jpg |
Nice pictures dude. Thanks. You gotta let us know your mods. Did you tuck the Runner's belly? It looks clear under there.
|
narrow 9.5" tires on an 8" wide rim with NO sidewall bulge
I was CONSTANTLY having the rims repaired to not have bead leaks. |
i don't like skiny tyres my truck looks silly enouth as it is lol what is the biggest tyre i can fit on a 86 lifted about to inches on not stock tims and don't know how much spacing there is??

Holy crap Batman..... that's a lot of answers! As far as sidewall exposure, I'm not too worried. Most of the driving I do is on logging/fire roads at high speeds to get my mountain bike to the trailhead. I have no intention of rock crawling or mudding. I do have the intention of putting in long-travel suspension front and back eventually.
Again, thanks for all the input & help, -frozen ---> :eeek: lots of snow this morning!!! |

Belly is not tucked yet. As soon as I have the time, I'm going to install my second transfercase, got the crap, just no time, and hopefully tuck it then, we'll see. Currently it only has a budbuilt under there. |
