another newb-tire to gas mileage question
mostly this truck will be used for on road, daily work stuff.
I think it comes with 15 inch tires, and not sure of width and height.
Would better gas mileage come from getting larger tires, such as 16 inch, and then going with say something like 205 / 75's? Or does anyone allready know of the good tire combo for gas mileage on these?

First off you need to say more about the truck IE: '89 4runner 4x4, auto with 3.0 or something like that.
your tire size will be imprinted on the side of the tire. Spending money to go from a 15" rim to a 16" rim IMO is a waste of money if you are worried about mileage.
Need more info on your truck.. 205/75/15 or 15's are going to be what I might find on my Camry. a lot of Toyota Trucks came stuck with 225/75/15's

okay, I am getting a 88' 4runner, 2x4 with optional 4x4, manual trans. it is all stock, just 1 owner. I am not sure what stock size tires come on this. Would not Toyota put on the most gas mileage worthy , size tires to begin with?

I think it means it is a normal 4x4, just he misunderstands the idea that you are always in 2WD until you choose to shift into 4WD. Maybe i dont know...
Anyway best way to increase MPG is the right amount of PSI in the tires. 5PSI and make the difference. Search the right PSI for your tire size.

I guess it normally runs as a 2x4, but it has, to the right of the manual shifter, another shift lever, to shift it down into 4 wheel drive, and it does this automatically, you don't have to get out, and lock down your wheels, it has self ratcheting chains/links to the wheels.
Oh I forgot , the engine is a 22re type.

ok, so when you tell people, for simplicity, just tell em its a 4x4... they will know...
like belieze said, look at the tires and see what PSI they can handle...
i run my summer tires at 37 PSI because they will heat up and expand a lil, and my winter tires at 45 PSI...
but i guess its driver choice really... more air pressure means a harsher ride and your shocks/springs get a rough beating, and softer tires makes your truck ride like a cadillac, but also more prone to bending the sidewall of the tire going around corners fast...
also, your truck probably came with 31 inch tires from the factory... and 4.10:1 gears... means you should, with correct driving habits, be getting about 18-22 mpg...

To that note, if you go with smaller tires, the truck will feel more powerful, and get a little better gas mileage in town, but worse on the highway. If you go with taller tires, the truck will feel weaker, and get worse mileage in town but better on the highway, assuming you keep it in the right rpm range for your setup. It all depends what you need to do specifically, but it you do all types of driving, typically the factory specs are the best. Anything else will improve something and take something away. It is really a balancing equation.

Going to a 16 inch tire as in the first post does not mean a larger tire... it means a larger rim or wheel. The 15 or 16 or 17 inch is the inside of the tire.
My experience with my recent purchase was 19mpg highway with 225/75/15 and 18mpg highway with 235/75/15. Just a small difference in outside tire diameter made a significant difference in mileage. I am adding about 10 miles to each tank with the larger tires to correct for speedo error.
Keep the stock tire size if you want the published mileage. If you want to spend time and money then try larger tires and regear your differentials to make up for it. Count on spending about $1500 for new tires and differentials though. ITs not cheap.
My mileage I just posted is on a Turbo 4 Runner. Yours should be slightly better.

thanks for all that info dudes, yes I guess it is a regular 4x4, just not sure how to speak when talking about these yet. I would say most of my driving would be around town, so I better keep the factory specs for tires, unless it is just getting crap mileage to begin with. Allthough when I do go hunt , it is typically a hour to 1.5 hour drive out of town, to get to the places, but that is usually just once or twice a month.
i do like a stiffer ride anyway, so I will go over , I guess 5 lbs over what is stated? and that is amazing

okay, another stupidity... I know what it means when you say something like
235/75/r15's. How do you then get the inches measurements that you dudes are coming up with? is it marked so on the tires? Such as 33 x 12.5's?

i have a converter on my phone, but a lot of tire companies use metric, but some of the older companies still use standard measurement...
so roughly, a 234/75/R15 means that it is a ~30 inch tire ~10 inches wide and of course a 15 inch rim... right guys???
anyways, it would help if you posted up sone info about where you live...
stick with a 31x10.50R15 and you will be satisfied... id say a BF Goodrich All Terrain...

guys, I must say, this is a great site. very quick in response, and no one making me feel like a non deserving dork , yet. Much kudos. I will try to read as much as poss from the factory manual, and learn as much as I can from that, when I

First off welcome to the site, and I hope you get the toyota you are wanting.
The 235/75/R15 is a tire size in metric the 33x12.5 is standard. You can convert the tire sizes to one another via a conversion calculator
The manufacturers sell tires in both sizes, but they won't sell both a sandard and a metric version of the same exact size. For instance a 33x12.5R15 converts to 318/72/R15 but you will never find a place that sells a 318/72/R15. The metrics usually convert to a decimal and are not even numbers. Why they did this, I don't know, but I am sure you can google it.
I know for the metric tires, the first number is the width in milimeters, the number after the first (/) is a percentage of the width that tells you the hight of the tire from the rim, or something like that... It is very difficult to figure out in your head, that is why I use the converter. The R stands for radial, NOT RIM, and the last number says how tall the rim is.
