Another Neutral Saftey Switch Post

Hey all. So I did an auto to manual swap on my 87 4runner a couple years ago. Jumped the NSS under the intake plenum. No problems. Long story short I replaced that 22re with another 22re however this motor is from an 86 manual trans. I believe 86 was the first year they started doing NSS. I don't have anything under my dash that plugs into that little switch on my clutch pedal. Done plenty of searching but all I'm getting is auto to manual swap. Does anyone know where I need to bypass this thing?

Derp. I'm actually talking about the "clutch safety switch" With my truck originally being an auto I have nothing to plug it into and I have no idea how to "trick" the motor in thinking the clutch pedal is depressed now that I have a "manual motor"

The right thing to do is connect the auto ECU park switch to your clutch switch. But you want to verify, might need to swap the " normality" of the switch NO for NC or vv.

IF, AND ONLY IF, you promise to crank only in neutral or with the clutch pedal pressed down, you do not need a clutch safety switch.
Clutch safety switch is normally open.
ON A STOCK manual tranny:
When you press on clutch pedal the CSS will close and connect negative side of starter relay to ground.
When you turn IGN to START ST1 contact will send 12V to positive of starter relay coil to energize it.

HOWEVER, you do not have a starter relay, you would have to add or make one, to prevent the click-no-crank issue and to protect your ST1 contacts.

Yeah I've been reading about the 78 Bronco relay mod. That's probably what I'm gonna do and just wire it straight to a push button. I'm not too proficient in electrical stuff and I'm probably in over my head here.

What do you want to wire to a push button?

What, exactly did you swap over form the 1986 truck? Just the long block engine? Engine with wiring harness? The entire 1986 system with ECU?

I am just trying to get an idea of what is in your 4Runner now.

Just wire it like I show here.
You don't need a part from Found On Road Dead; grab a stock starter relat from anothe 4Runner / truck. Those are bullet-proof. The reason for click-no-crank problem is the wrong wiring FROM THE FACTORY.

Okay I am trying to understand this. You have an '87 runner that was auto and you converted to manual. You were able to jumper the NSS and it ran fine. You replaced the engine in your '87 runner with one from an '86 and swapped every engine sensor and wire meaning the entire engine harness over to the '86 engine and now it won't run?

I'm getting nothing. No relay click or anything. There's nothing telling the motor that I have the clutch pedal pressed down and I have nothing underneath my dash to plug into the neutral switch. I'm using the 86 wire loom that came with the "new" motor and plugged it into my old auto ECU. I just wired it up and got it to crank before I got called in for dinner. So that was the issue. I have an offroading trip the weekend after next and I still have dual cases to do before I go so I don't have time to hunt down a manual ECU (if that's what I even need).

You need to swap the engine harness from the '87 over to the '86. '86 was a bastard year and is not compatible with the '87. And if any sensor connector on the '86 doesn't match, swap it out. I hope you still have the '87 engine and harness.

Why are u still talking about the Neutral switch?
Manual tranny shud not need it anymore.
Check if u hav it wired according to schematic above, get a multimeter and check if u are getting power to various points as u turn ign switch.

I do still have it, yes. I was under the impression the 86-88 were essentially the same. Thanks! Like I said I've got it to crank and haven't had time to mess with it more, the motor has been sitting a while. If I can't get it running I'll definitely try that. Thanks again.
