aftermarket tach or oem cluster?

hey guys i've got a 91 toyota pickup 2wd with the plain cluster with no tach. I know this isn't a powerhouse motor by far but would like to know where i stand rpm wise. What would be more cost effective and easier to install, a factory oem cluster or a aftermarket tachometer? If i use an oem cluster what year/model will fit? thanks..

You have to have a cluster from a 89 to 92, becasue yours is a cable style speedo. After that they are electronic. It's a lot easier to use a 4cyl cluster as the tach will match properly, you can adjust the 6 but it is a pain in the rear to do it exactly. You also have to deal with the odometer, which could be higher mileage, or put your speedo in the donor cluster, but the needles might not come off easy and you could damage the speedo mechanism. If you can find the one you want, its pretty easy even if you dont have the tach lead wire to run the extra wire. Buying after market might be easier to install, but hten you have an extra lump on the dash. They make a radio din instrument cluster that holds 3 little things if thats enough, or you could use a nice pillar mounted tach. I thnk with all the dash dissasembly, that I would have gone with a nice external instead of fighting the OEM cluster install. Although, my speedo cable was so noisy I had to take it all apart.
